I've missed going to the movies these past few years. So.. what do you think is the best movie you've ever seen and why?

Wow. Ever?

The best movies I have seen that I could think of, are Fight Club, Dracula (original), and Wizard of Oz.

What's the Fight Club about? And this original Dracula movie - is this the really old movie with some actor named (I know I am going to misspell his name..Bellagosi? Is that right?)

Yeah, Bela Lugosi. The 1931 version.

Fight Club is this movie where this guy and his psycho friend start a fight club, where they and a bunch of other dudes just sit around and fight each other. Without giving too much away, the fight club grows into a kind of cult. Great movie.

Bela Lugosi...I thought I read somewhere that he really believed he was Dracula? In fact..I think I read he was buried in a coffin with his Dracula outfit on. I've seen snips of his movies..he seemed strange..but very convincing.

Umm.. I've never heard that, and believe me, I usually know these things.

OK..I looked it up. I was wrong. He was buried in his Dracula cape.

Fight Club is about annihilation of the Self. (just my opinion) Great flick.


My favorite movie is always changing but right now I'd have to say it's, "The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things". This is a fantastic movie about a child who is taken from a perfectly good loving foster home one day by police and returned to his drug addicted mother. The movie is cleverly shot from the child's point of view concentrating only on what the child can see, what a child would consider most significant but we as the adult audience can understand what's happening. For example he is in one scene, living in a house where they either sell meth or make it. You're not sure which but it doesnt matter. He spends his time locked to the tv because no one bothers him then, but he has no idea what's happening when the police come. This movie communicates to us, even reminds us from a long distant past what it was ever like to be a confused or frightened at any time as a child. It reminds us what innocence really is. It also shows us in a very real way how society and the state fail children like this.


I know, I know. A barrel of laughs huh? It ain't a happy story no, but I wouldn't ever recommend a 'sad' movie unless it was really really good. It's really an incredible film from an incredible author, JT LeRoy. I would ambiguously suggest finding a way to watch it without spending money however, as the studio just ripped off the writer because she used her pen name.

requiem for a dream , because this is the only movie which makes you feel

This isn't set in stone, but the one that comes to mind is The Usual Suspects. Great movie. The story just seems to fall into place. Good writing and character development.

For those who haven't seen it, it's about Kaiser Soze, a legendary criminal. He manipulates a crew of gangsters and thieves (that he brought together in a very sly manner)to do his dirty work. Many events happen in the movie with the characters not understanding what's really going on, but everything ties together in the end. It's the kind of film you have to watch a few times to catch everything.

As far as comedies go, I'd have to say either Big Lebowski or 40 Year Old Virgin.

I'd put Usual Suspects up there too.

The Holy Mountain. Whenever I'm watching a Jodorowsky film I feel like I'm watching that tape in The Ring, and soon I will get a phone call telling me that my life has been forever altered.

Ahk, what you're talking about sounds a lot like the latest Terry Gilliam movie, Tideland. Sounds great.

40 year old virgin is a hilarious movie.  One of my top 10 probably (I haven't order my movies very well).

I have a few feel good movies that I enjoy for comedy that do not hold any huge critical acclaim at all:

I enjoy watch movies and want to see more, but when it comes to my favorite it has more to do with how many times I will sit through the same movie again and again.  I loved Usual suspects, but after seeing it 2 or 3 times, I was done (yet with fight club I can still watch it again and again).  Some of the great movies of all time are, well, great, but I have to be in a certain mood to want to watch them.  My top 5 consists of movies that, if they were being shown on TV, I will get the DVD and watch it from the beginning without commercial interruption.

Sorry for the long winded post, just picking a favorite movie requires more than just a name of a movie for me.

Fight club and the Matrix.

Those both sound like good recomms 2112. i'll look for them.

Hey mic, I don't want to sound racist, but why do all black dudes like Scarface? Every single black guy whose house I've stepped in has either that movie sitting on top of his dvd player, or a poster in his room. Actually, my last roomate was black and he had that poster in our living room. What is with that movie?

Because it's about taking shit from no body and getting whats yours.  Consider the history and hopefully that should make sense.

It's a classic and it's really quotable for one, even though most of the people in the movie are white or hispanic.

A Clockwork Orange and 300.

Yes!..I saw that movie 300. It was terrific!

300, was quite a comedy where (supposedly) Greeks spoke with Scottish accents and Persians were combination of drag queens and monsters,,, i don't think even Frank Miller's wild imagination could do that,,, anyway i like Miller's Hellspawn better hopefully someday there would be quality movie of it,,, Rodriguez comes in mind,,, he like all that odd stylish stuff,,,

I would pop in the dvd if baseball wasn't coming on.

In 1967 it was bizarre. Today it's just a cool movie.

The book is more bizarre as the main characters are only 14-16 years old.

Did anyone ever see the Blair Witch Project? THAT movie scared me so much. The only other movie to do that was the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I couldn't watch it all the way through, I had to get up and leave. Wasn't that based on a real story?

I love horror movies. The only one that scared me was probably Candyman. Or any movies with spiders...

The big queeny from Arachnophobia creeped the shit out of me.  I never went down into my basement for weeks.

As far as my favorite off the wall film, it's called Koyanaasqatsi.

It show all sorts of things in time lapse video. Airports, vegetation, hotdog factory lines. No words, characters or plot. Just crazy time elapse video accompanied by electronic music from Phillip Glass.

You had me with a distorted face there for a second until you mentioned Philip Glass.  ;D

Pulp Fiction.  I love that movie.  My son and I watch it at least once a month just for the quotes.  'Zed's dead honey'....

Chainsaw was more accurately based on many serial killers, and melded into one. 

Find the movie and watch it, I think you'd like it.

A good movie is a terrible thing to waste.

No.  I rarely see first run movies in the theaters.  I'm too cheap to pay ten bucks for it.

You? Cheap? Never would've guessed, but I'm not going to see it the first week, mostly because of my experiences of going to see movies on their premiring week.

No.  I love that movie, it is fricken hilarious!  If you've ever worked in a cube farm of any size, it adds meaning to it. But I've only seen it like 3 or 4 times.  And I don't own it. 

At one point I worked for a company called infotech. We had to fill out daily MIS reports. No cover page was needed, but a daily memo was always necessary.

It was nothing like infotech (at least toward the end of my time there. I had beers with my supervisor (the opposite of Lumberg) after work, we had an open office, no cubicles, and it was really laid back. The only thing we would ever get hassled about was low production, but that was very very rare. It didn't stop my friends from making initech-tps-lumberg jokes every time I saw them though. "Did you get the memo?" became a common greeting.

What was even funnier was that the supervisor there when I started was exactly like Lumberg, right down to the yeah.... I sent her daily emails on progress as required, and if she ever asked about what got done the day before I would ask her "Um, yeah...Did you get the memo?" She had never seen Office Space, so she was completely puzzled as to why all the other employees were struggling not to crack up laughing.

"The time the earth stood still" is one of my old movie sci-fi favorites.  "Gojira" of course is my most personal favorite.

As boring as it was, and this may be cliche, from someone who understands cinema and film I think "Citizen Kane" was the best ever made.  Period.

Best Movie I have ever seen: Central Station

It won the best movie in the Cannes Film fesitval some years back.

It is warm, full of current social issues affecting Brasil, and encapsulates everything about Modern Day Brasil.

Filmed also in two wonderful locations, Rio and Salvador.

One of those movies that makes you sprint out of the movie theatre to start living life. God, I love Brasil  ;D

Speaking of political movies, The New York Times is reporting that George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming up for a movie based on Howard Dean's 2004 presidential bid. It should be a scream, er I mean a blast. ;)

One of the very best movies ever made (in the comedy field) is Mr. Roberts. Terrific cast and terrific movie.

If your for socialized medicine.  This one definitely hits you in the heart like Moore is notorious for, except you are not mad at him after the movie.

I just saw this movie called Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey. It's a 1932 silent German film about vampires, obviously. It might be the best vampire movie ever. Even better than Dracula or Nosferatu.

Sounds fascinating. Is it on dvd?

Not just horror films-all types of films in those days were better, IMHO. My personal favorite genre is film noir. I have just gotten a copy of "Notorious" a great Hitchcock film from 1946.

I don't watch too many movies, but being a horror buff, I do watch those old ones. But you're right, just about everything was better back then.

I love this time of year because AMC and TCM show all the old horror movies. They're playing "London After Midnight" this weekend. My Tivo is set.

How can there be pages of discussion on the "Best Move Ever Made" and no mention of The Godfather?  I'm shocked and appalled!

Sometimes on cable you can catch a channel that is doing a Godfather weekend or something.  I could watch those movies a dozen times and not get tired of it.  I like the long (5-6 hour) version where they put Godfather I and II in chronological order.

One of my favorite scenes is where Kay is leaving and saying her goodbyes to the kids and Michael comes home.  That silence as he shuts the door...

You are absolutely right. Those were superb movies. Therein lies the trouble of limiting it to one movie. There many great movies-The Godfather & The Godfather Part II, The Searchers, Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Chinatown, and on & on.

I have, my teacher brought it in after we had finished reading the book (completely unedited).  It was ok, but the book did a better job of making you understand the Big Brother idea.

Well, 1984 does have some scenes with nudity, but our English teacher at the time felt the irony would be too great for her to show us an edited movie about big brother and those who edit history in order to control the way people think.

The most effective movie I have seen is "Last House on the Left". It makes everybody uncomfortable. I've never seen so many people walk away, except for maybe "The Aristocrats".
