Title: My photos from.... Post by: tejtej on October 13, 2007, 09:45:22 AM My photos from.... just about anywhere, post whatever you like.
I couldn't find anyone to go with me today. One went surfing, one trains for a half-marathon, one couple wants to sleep in the morning (come on), one is recovering from a flu and one said it is too difficult for her. I went alone, start 500m, finish 2347m above sea level. Went to Bavški Grintavec today, the one in the middle left. (http://www.moj-album.com/slike/1471499/fbTL4p3KdRG6rra1.v.jpg) Made good progress before sunrise. (http://www.moj-album.com/slike/1471499/s06VRMy4GY120qsz.v.jpg) Spent a lot of time thinking where to go next week. (http://www.moj-album.com/slike/1471499/KfPKBk6cv5lc2TFe.v.jpg) Met just these 2 guys. (http://www.moj-album.com/slike/1471499/RBaX0ycT8m3lwR4H.v.jpg) Title: Re: My photos from.... Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: allpoints on October 21, 2007, 03:09:56 PM A friend took me flying a few weeks ago out of Seward, Alaska over Resurrection Bay and Bear Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park.
The light was nice... A little glare on the plexiglas window as we take off and look west towards town: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0343.jpg) But things get better when we look more N towrd Mt Benson, one of the peaks above the town: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0411.jpg) But we're headed South, over the Bay: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0396.jpg) Over Caines Head, then we catch our first glimpse of Bear G as we round Calisto head: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0352.jpg) Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: allpoints on October 21, 2007, 03:16:04 PM As we fly over Bear Glacier Bay, we remember that this whole bay used to be a glacier thousands of feet thick:
(http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0355.jpg) Nice light: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0358.jpg) Bear Glacier Lake. Meltwater from the glacier at the very end of summer: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0357.jpg) Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: allpoints on October 21, 2007, 03:22:02 PM We drop in low over the glacier:
(http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0376.jpg) And feel the cool air: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0373.jpg) Buzz the lake: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0378.jpg) And catch a sweet look SE past Cape Aialik and over the Gulf Of Alaska. When the swell's from the SE, we call the break on ocean side of the beach "Moraine". It's a left with a backdoor that goes double overhead before it gets too snrfy to ride: (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/allpoints360/KDL/PICT0379.jpg) Title: Re: My photos from.... Wow, what an amazing thread and posts. Absolutely stunning pics COS and AP. :) Big applauds to both of you for that. AP, really amazing scenery and stunning picture quality seeing where you were when you took them. COS, great mountain pictures. I love the huts too :) Title: Re: My photos from.... I have to translate to feet, so you started at about 1,500 feet and hiked to about 7,500 feet? That's a real lung-blower. How many miles (kilometers)? Good trail all the way or were you bushwacking? Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: tejtej on November 07, 2007, 10:47:21 AM Amazing. Flipping gorgeous. It's not that much in km, maybe 5 km one way, 3 miles. The trail is marked all the way (white-red signs painted on trees and rocks, palm size) but from the appearance the trail is not used often. Lung-blower... my chronic lung problems lead to this hobby. Anyway, I have a new camera (used in Banja Luka), I will test it in the mountains this weekend. Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: jpn of Seattle on November 07, 2007, 08:00:16 PM Isn't it getting cold and snowy in the mountains yet? Here in the Pacific Northwest of the United States the snow level is probably 5,000 feet this time of year.
How is life there? Getting back to normal after the war? Are people bitter or reconciling to their situation? Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: tejtej on November 07, 2007, 09:53:43 PM Isn't it getting cold and snowy in the mountains yet? Here in the Pacific Northwest of the United States the snow level is probably 5,000 feet this time of year. Winter slowly starting, there is some snow in the mountains, mostly ankle deep, melts during the day, freezes during the night. Winter tiers or chains prepared in the car mandatory as of 15th of november. How is life there? Getting back to normal after the war? Are people bitter or reconciling to their situation? I'm not sure if you want to know about my country (10 day war) or Bosnia (3 years), so I will just presume it's the later. Well, after 12 years it has ended (1992-1995), the infrastructure is a mixture of modern buildings and socialist urbanism. Houses that were damaged by fire or shells are now hard to find, some areas were not cleared of mines. Orthodox churches of Serbs, catholic churches of Croats and mosques of Bosniaks (previous name for Slavs of islamic faith was Muslim - as a nation) are more or less rebuild in all areas, other signs of religion of the majority of the people in the area are blown out of proportions and put on a visible places (like 20 meters crosses on the hilltops). Banja Luka had and has a serbian majority, mosques were all demolished during the war, all are now rebuild except the one that was on the UNESCO list. All of them can be recognised by huge graveyards around them, almost all tombstones are new. It is just like an entire muslim population of the area has moved to the graveyard. The reason I didn't take any picture of them was because a funeral was underway and I didn't want to bother people involved. When you talk to people (and this was my impression in all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina I visited in the past 6 years), there are 2 kinds. One express deep sadness; refuges abroad and old people who already experienced WWII. The other express a certain satisfaction of being involved in the war, fighting the enemy, burning the houses, "getting even" for all the atrocities and historic disputes. For these people it is rather obvious that the only thing they are sorry is that the evil international community prevented them from total victory. No, there is no reconciliation. To draw parallels with my country, the civil war that coincided with WWII is still a major topic. Interestingly, dictators that ruled Yugoslavia and countries after the disintegration of Yugoslavia are in general regarded as lesser evil. They can be forgotten and accepted as a part of history more easily, not so with civil wars. Title: Re: My photos from.... Post by: jpn of Seattle on November 08, 2007, 07:24:02 PM Thanks so much for sharing that. I'd love to visit the area someday. It looks beautiful, even if some of the people hold on to ugly feelings...
It sounds as though you can view it as an outsider--are you a native, or did you come from somewhere else? Title: Re: My photos from.... Slovenia and Bosnia were parts of the same countries between 1878 and 1991, except during WWII. Title: Re: My photos from....
