GOP: NASCAR is contagious, but its fans are not

WASHINGTON — Being around NASCAR fans requires no inoculation.

That was the word Thursday from Republican officials after they learned that a congressional committee's Democratic staffers had advised aides to get vaccinated for hepatitis and other diseases before visiting NASCAR events in Concord, N.C., and Talladega, Ala.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said his committee aides were visiting health-care centers, detention facilities and other operations where they could be exposed to communicable diseases. He said the immunizations were routine for health-care workers.

"Democrats should know that there is no preventive measure yet designed to ward off the blue-collar values and patriotism that NASCAR fans represent," said Linda Daves, the chairwoman of the North Carolina Republican Party. "If they aren't careful, they just might catch some of it."

Republican Rep. Tim Walberg, whose district includes the Michigan International Speedway, said Democrats must not understand the term "rubbin' is racing."

"To suggest that vaccines are needed to attend NASCAR races is insulting to millions of hardworking Americans who love their country and the smell of burnt rubber," he said.

The brouhaha began when the House Committee on Homeland Security decided to study public health preparedness at mass gatherings. They advised aides to get immunized for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus and influenza before going to the UAW-Ford 500 in Talladega last weekend and the Bank of America 500 this weekend northeast of Charlotte, N.C.

The committee is examining whether the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is coordinating with state, local and private law-enforcement and health-care responders to prepare for possible mass emergencies.

Rep. Robin Hayes, the North Carolina Republican whose district includes the Lowe's Motor Speedway, complained in a letter to the committee's chairman about staff members feeling the need to get vaccinated before visiting his hometown.

Hayes and Thompson exchanged words in a CNN interview. Thompson told Hayes he "ought to be ashamed" of himself for using an effort to protect workers for a "few minutes of fame."

Hayes encouraged people to come to Concord, noting, "We got our shots when we were born."

Unlike a sporting event such as the Super Bowl, which draws about 70,000 people for a few hours, major stock-car races can draw 200,000 to 300,000 fans or more, many of whom camp on-site for several days. Also, NASCAR is privately owned, and directly employs some of the security officials who are in place on race weekends.

The Drudge Report Web site, which became famous for breaking the Monica Lewinsky scandal, linked to the original story on the matter on the Web page of The Charlotte Observer, which McClatchy owns, with the headline "Redneck rash."

Republicans said the suggestion of vaccines usually recommended for travel to Third World countries showed that the Democrats were out of touch with real Americans.

"While red-blooded, patriotic Americans were packing their coolers and gathering their families in preparation for attending last week's race at Talladega, a leading Democrat was advising staff to get immunized," said a news release by the National Republican Congressional Committee titled "Talladega Frights: Democrats Allergic to NASCAR Nation."

Being a black man going to a race I felt a little uncomfortable being around a bunch of southern boys with their rebel flags.

I ended up having a great time and was welcomed by all I came in contact with. Was even asked why more black people don't come because everyone loves seeing car wreck in a controlled situation.

Yet the democrats slap the Americans in the face because they know 99.9% of race fans will never cast a vote for any liberal.

I lived in Mississippi for a while, tech school.

My first weekend off the base we went to the local mall, the Edgewater.

Some of those same people sitting next to you, DogFace, were probably the ones in the white sheets having their KKK rally on Saturday morning.

In fact, I guarantee it.

Yeah, immunization's a terrible idea.

What kind of biggot would suggest that a crowd of 200,000 drunken partiers might pose a risk for communicable disease?

Next thing you know, they'll be saying that the water in Tijuana isn't fit for drinking, or that student's with influenza should be kept home from school.

What an outrage!

Shows how much you know about the crowd at a race......200,000 drunks?

So everyone that is at a race are wasted and have a disease.....

Then we better shut down the city of SF...you know how all people that live in SF are gay with AIDs.......

That goes for NY...you know, the city is nothing but foreigners and god only knows what disease's they have brought here from whatever country they are from....

Its so easy to be a bigot isn't lily?

Are you denying that people drink at NASCAR races? You think "drunken partiers" is a bigotted description? It would indeed be ironic if I were criticizing people who drink. They go to have a good time, and no, I don't think all of them are drunk.

If you think a party that large with lots of drunk people (many of them are and there's nothing wrong with that) and portable public crappers poses no health risk, you don't understand disease very well.

Most sports are expensive if you want to watch in person.  Baseball probably being the most reasonable.  I live in a town with a major NHL contender, one of the final 4 in MLB, and a former contender in the NFL.  And I generally cannot afford to see any in person.  Playoff tickets for the Rockies?  Forget it.  Unless I want to go to MLS, or Lacross.  Let's not even get into the cost of skiing....

What a bunch of bullshit...........listen y'all........this kind of crap is what politicians do to distract us from the real issues at hand and divide us into conservative and liberal.  Don't buy into it.  Both Dems and Reps do it and until WE start showing Washington that this kind of crap doesn't work they will continue using the media to stir up a hornet's nest whenever they can.  Telling employees who work for you to go to a public event to evaluate the readiness of Homeland Security to respond to emergency health issues sounds more like someone considering liability issues to me.  I doubt it has anything to do with what the stereotype of NASCAR fans is.  If I were sending my employers to an event that had almost a quarter of a million people, I would expect that communicable diseases would be a threat to those I am sending.  THIS INCLUDES COLDS, FLU, ETC........so why would I risk any liability on my part???  I would say, "Go get some vaccinations so that the risk is minimal..........."  This just another case of politicians twisting and turning things to get the "commoners" all riled up..........I'm so tired of it..............

I actually tried to be interested in NASCAR, but couldn't. When I moved to NC, a bunch of the framers I was working with would watch the races and drink beer on Sundays. These guys were fanatics. I went over to watch the race with them one time. I even put into the crew's weekly NASCAR pool a couple times. I had a few bucks on it and it was still boring.

Yes I'm calling US soldiers an embarrassment to this country.  Real men would lay down their weapons and refuse to fight.   Too bad they're too stupid and too weak to do something like that.   If they had any brains in the first place they would never have joined the military.   You have got to be a real fuckin retard to sign up for Iraq duty.

That right there is a great argument for why we need the draft.  If that's the pool that our officers are getting picked out of, it's no wonder we haven't won EITHER of our current wars yet.  Clearly our best and brightest are not enlisting.

While NFL does have a large crowd, lets look at their season.  It normally is in the Fall/Winter.  People are more covered in clothing (with the exceptions of the select few that we will refer to here after as morons).  In the cold germs do not live as long away from the host, though, the host immune system is also lowered, but all in all people are less likely to transfer diseases in the stadium, in the bars afterwards may be a different story.  So you are in a situation where you are covered, unless you are the moron group referred to above, and in an envoroment not conducive to germs survival.  But in all seriousness, this is a rather dumbass topic to begin with.

Pick one.

Which one has a better chance of topless good-looking women?

(I almost just said topless, but really, does one really want to see that at a NASCAR event)

Well I have seen what you liberals call good looking women....so I would say a for a fact NASCAR....

not what you would call take home to mom liberal women......

Doggie Boy: Where did you ever get the idea that Nascar races were  conservative events ?? I saw one once on TV. Did you know that they only turn LEFT?
They never turn RIGHT, I don't even think they can!

BTW many of us take offense with your avatar, Bush flipping off the American flag... its down right anti American!

Have you guys even been to a Nascar event? Back when my father did some work for Mead, they used to give us tickets to the race and to their little food area.
I can say that at Watkins Glen, no one smells. And it's actually quite an enjoyable experience.

However, going to a concert at the local club tends to be pretty bad when you've got little 15 year olds moshing like little d-bags.

Never got into NASCAR. Seemed boring to me. I lived in England for three years when I was a kid. Went to Brand's Hatch to watch formula one races. I like Can-Am racing and LeMans - but oval track laps?

Seemed boring as hell.

I've seen the traffic heading down to Dover on race day, and if the wind is right, I can smell it as bad as the mushroom farms of Kennett Square.

I don't think it goes that low.  But in your case, I will ask Chovy about something just for you, fitting a person such as yourself.

Ahhhhh, you go against all that is holy when you do that.  And so I shall smote you from up high, and all will look upon it and say is was just.  Then again, it might be punishment enough to be known as one of the 13 applauses that DF has received.  Let that be a pox on you.   8)

No, I'm not saying I would do that.  I am far to nice of a person for that.

'Rigid Digit'?  That is good though.  Never heard that one before!

Smoted for smoting me.

Applauded for for using the word smote.

Edit - It won't let me do both, it keeps changing back and forth from 27 and 28 for - and +. This thing doesn't care for karmic balance apparently.
