We should slash like hell.

When pigs fly...
32  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Were driving less, and the DOT doesn't like it. on: August 14, 2008, 04:23:47 PM
Granted, gas prices in, say, West Los Angeles and Beverly hills can get really bad, but, most of the high end stations in those areas also offer "full service".  For those of you to young to remember what that was, it's when you pull up to the station, remain seated in your car, an attendant comes and cleans your windows and checks your oil while he's pumping your gas.

Jersey still does that... AND they have the cheapest gas in the country.

I honestly don't know how they do it...

Quote from: Retro
In the middle class suburbs I find the cheapest gas and the best selection at markets.  If I go down to say, the Adams district, gas prices are higher and the markets are crap with no a/c or selection.  Even the .99 cent stores suck bad, but in the suburbs there cleaner nicer better stocked.  I know its not a conspiracy.  But it is a trend.

I live in the middle class suburbs and it's been lingering around $3.55 for about a week (Shell has 5 cents off on thursdays, but I only fill up once every 2 weeks - I LOVE MY CAR!) while just north of us in southern PA and the like, it's about $0.15 higher.

They're the "Soccer Mom" kinda neighborhoods.

I noticed that gas prices are higher in high income areas because they can afford it.

Low income areas have cheaper gas because if they didn't more people would walk. You can't do that in the suburbs...

For what it's worth, machioveli, you'd think the Pentagon would have better security. I mean, it's the headquarters of the US Military, not a 7-11 in Compton.

Right, they were expecting a 500mph plane to come crashing into the Pentagon so that is why the camera was installed there. Not to capture images as they "Stop" and pass through the gate.

So then the only camera the Pentagon has watching the premises is a 1fps dinger at the enterance?

Are you saying I could drive my Saturn Ion right up to the side of the source of US military information and be seen by ONE camera?

C'mon. This is the Pentagon. THE PENTAGON.

Am I agreeing with "The Patriot"? Absolutely not. I'm just saying I think there are legitimate questions that deserve to be asked, but people like the OP are too busy blaming the Jews or the NWO and keeping semi-rational debate from happening.

I just think it's odd that the US Pentagon is watched by a camera *I* could buy at Radio Shack.

Abraxas, when the price of a gallon comes back down, people will cease cutting back on driving and demand will return. We are going to need energy sources to maintain our current lifestyles.

Conservation can be forced on us with high prices...it won't happen naturally.

That's true... but the decrease in the number of SUVs on the road and the increase in the number of Hybrids and fuel efficient cars will have a lasting effect on demand and consumption. People aren't going to trade in their new 30mpg Toyota Carola for a 14mpg F-350.

Also, while $3 looks like a great deal compared to what we've dealt with recently, inflation is still going up, which means $3 is STILL a lot of money... and is actually more then it used to be...

Comes back down?  Do you really imagine it is going to come back down?  A dime here, a nickle there, maybe a whole quarter.  More than that I think you are deluding yourself if you think it is coming back down.  What was Exxon-Mobile's profit's last quarter?

This frightens me, actually.

When a barrel of oil went up, gas kept a quick pace, rising each day.

But now oil is down to almost $120 a barrel (correct me if I'm wrong) but gas is still well over $3.50. Oil's gone down close 40% while gas has gone down 25%? WTF?!?!

AMAZING what simple conservation (ALL ON IT'S OWN) does to the price of oil and gas?

All without drilling a single acre...

AMAZING what buying a fuel efficient car will do, let alone driving it at lower RPMs or on tires that are maintained at good pressures.

All without drilling a single acre...

FANTASTIC how some people go out of there way to walk or ride a bike and what it does to gas and oil prices.

All without drilling a single acre....

It should be noted that One of McCains top advisors Randall Scheunemann was, up to 2007 a lobbeist for the country of Georgia. One has to wonder how unbiased his critisism of Russia's actions are, with someone as involved with Georgias side as Scheunemann is, advising him. Scheunemann wouldn't condem the ethnic cleansing that Georgia has been  practicing , after all he was/ is their advocate. Does anyone believe that McCain is taking a a real look at what is motivating Russia? How objective is he, when looking at the situation through the eyes of an advocate for Georgia?
Its unlikely that Russia would have taken such action had Georgias petition to join NATO been accepted. We need to back up and ask why was the petition to join denied? What were they doing that was so bad that NATO wouldn't let them in? McCain came out quickly with an opinion on whats going on. Now we need to ask how accurate and objective is it?

You're right. That is information worth noting and thanks for bringing it to my attention. Do you have a link, by chance?

I'm a little concerned with how little Georgia's initial violence has been ignored.

Yes, Russia over-reacted... but Georgia invaded S Ossetia to keep them from declaring independence. Imagine if Russia invaded Georgia for doing the same thing...

Common to the republican AND DEMOCRATIC play book is this kind of transference of guilt I.E. accuse the opponent of what you are guilty of in order to diffuse any future accusation on yourself.

C'mon, free.

Let's be objective here... police
OK Abraxas, convince me. Site an example of the Democratic party pulling this decidedly Rovian tactic with link, and I will amend my post.

You do it everytime Neue or Patton brings something up about a Democrat!

Here is a photo Patton doesn't want us to look at...McCain embracing Bush and all he represents
...note how his eyes are closed in what appears to be a profound emotional display in an adoration of the man and what he stands for.

Or maybe he just pooped himself.

Old people do that, ya know...

Intresting some resort to personal attacks as if it strengthens their position or will change opinions of others.

When did being called a hypocrite become a "personal attack"?

Quote from: Patton
Advocates for pot speak out both sides of their mouth...advocating it's prescriptive use for treatment of cancer and HIV patients.....and then advocate it's recreational use.

What other prescriptive pharmaceutical gets this attention?

Bottom line is I'm not responsible for the drug laws....but I agree with them.

How are we talking out of both sides of our mouths by mentioning ALL the benefits of pot?

What about the people that say chewing gum is a good way to fight cavaties, burn calaries and also have fresh breath? Do the recreational benefits somehow negate the other effects too?

Quote from: Patton
If alcohol were made illegal....I'd be fine with that too....I may have a glass two to three times a year....intresting that others try to paint me as some kind of alcoholic....it's actually laughable.

I am certainly aware of how strongly some cling to their use of drugs and alcohol....makes people crazy enough to lash out a people they no nothing of over the internet.....

Who called you a drunk? Who's "clinging" to their drugs? I stop when I go back up to school (cause of random testing) as easily as some people might put down a glass of water. So who's "clinging"?

Look, I understand it's hard to refute fact, but there is no reason to lie about what people say, Patton.

ps: the irony of our conversation is that I agree with less pollution, alternative fuels, cleaner environment, etc...

My hair just isn't on fire that we need to start walking or drown our coasts.

Because when you're hair is on fire, it's already too late to worry about how it happened.

Isn't it better to just not flirt with fire in the first place?

It's all just really stupid and just because McCain is captain obvious doesn't mean he gets any points in my book.

Bingo. "Obvious-isms" sound so much like an actual policy too...but they ain't. I'm betting there's a wide sea between what McCain trumpets now and what he'd actually do if in the position.

Very, very true... and perhaps I should have made that clearer.

McCain seems to understand the situation better then the MSM and other politicians, but if "push came to shove" and he was the guy in the big chair, I also have to wonder if he'd do what he reccomends.

I'm just saying he's demonstrating a slightly better grasp of the situation then Obama... or Bush for that matter.

I guess you assert that someone who routinely overdoses people with Schedule II narcotics is unschooled on drugs?

Didn't say that.

I said that someone who hasn't smoked marijuana should not lecture others, who have tried it, on its effects.

As a doctor, your experience with drugs (in the clinical sense) is more intense then the vast majority of others here, but I'm not talking about what morphine can do to you. I'm talking about the medical reasons why marijuana should be as illegal as other, more harmful products THAT ARE LEGAL.

Quote from: Patton
My decision to steer away from drugs and alcohol is a lifetime in the front row seat to the pain and misery you never see.

Next time you hold a dead child struck down by a drunk driver....let me know how it works for you.

Just another day at the Trauma center.

Did I ever say I'm more experienced in these matters? Did I ever even pretend I've experiences the same things you have? Did I ever give the impression that I was somehow ungrateful of the job you do?

No. I don't believe I did.

So why the guilt trip, then?

Are you sooooooo unable to make a legitimate argument for the criminilzation of marijuana that you have to stray so wildly off topic?

I don't need to see it from another point of view....I find those arguing for the right to get drunk and stoned rather silly.

I guess that glass of wine you have with dinner and any benefit it provides to the social enviroment is equally silly?

Quote from: Patton
Death and dismemberment would warp you too, I'm sure....I make no apologies....

And I make no argument.

You're right. Gruesome sights like dismembered children would be hard to erase from my mind... but what do such nightmares have to do with your personal experience with pot?

Quote from: Patton
I am still only one vote in the grand scheme, and with the opinions of others shared here, I will be on the losing side.

It still doesn't change my opinion on drugs and alcohol.

I never thought it would.

I just hoped you would actually see how ridiculous it is that marijuana is illegal even though it's effects differ so wildly from those of alcohol and other drugs. But I see your answer is to just start restricting the legal poisons we have now... cause it worked SOOOOOOOOOOO well the last time we did it Roll Eyes ...

I'm sorry to see that Puritanism didn't die with the Puritans.

I havn't done anything with regards to taking away anyones rights....I merely advocate the status quo....these are decisions made long before I arrived on scene.

In case you haven't noticed, the "status quo" isn't working:

All of this "annually costs US taxpayers an estimated $7.6 billion, approximately $10,400 per arrest" in 2005(SOUCE).

Now tell me why this "status quo" is whorth advocating...

Quote from: Patton
I would need to read the proposed legislation....if there was a clause for use inside ones own home listening to Pink Floyd that did not subject the public to stoned zombies roaming the streets...I suppose I would not object.

That's generally how people use it...
