Tadpol, you are bigoted stupid and evil.  Grin

Doctors have a duty of care to their patients that supersedes everything else. Hence, for example, doctors can prescribe the pill to teenage girls without her parents knowledge or consent.
2  Political Discussions / Middle East / Re: Should Israel re-invade Gaza strip so Fatah can gai ncontrol over there? on: July 04, 2008, 12:48:28 PM
An occupation would be OK in the short term if Israel could do it without murdering a bunch of innocent people.

Occupy to send them flowers you say? I would happily attend with flowers to their funeral.

No, there are a whole world of possibilities in between doing nothing and killing civilians.

Quote
But they have never done that and have no intention of doing so. Israel punishes the Palestinians for voting for Hamas, and everyone knows it.

Israel pushes Palestinians in general otherwise there would not be a place called Israel by now.
Arabs are happily killing each other instead of having proper government that can communicate with Israeli government. Who am I to interrupt those innocent victims of blood thirsty Jews.

If Israel did not punish the Palestinians there would be a peaceful place called Israel now, as well as a peaceful place called Palestine.
3  Political Discussions / Middle East / Re: Should Israel re-invade Gaza strip so Fatah can gai ncontrol over there? on: July 04, 2008, 12:43:17 PM
The election speaks loudly toward what the Palestinian people think..., And this explains why they never seem to miss and opportunity to miss an opportunity for peace.  In the US, if you elect the Ku Klux Klan, YOU GET the Ku Klux Klan.... Maybe this logic doesn't apply in Palestine (??)

The Covenant of Hamas... The founding documentation detailing the agenda, goals, and modus operandi of this group the people of Palestine elected:

So is it your belief that in a democracy civilians are a legitimate target for military operations? If we were to apply that across the board it would also justify 9/11.

Also, Realityman, I have read over some of your earlier posts (which, I must admit, I skimmed first-time round).

Firstly, there is no evidence that Hamas have actually violated the ceasefire. Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade have fired rockets, but not Hamas. Hamas has so far stuck to its word, unless you are suggesting that it was really them firing the rockets. But you would need evidence to back up such a claim, rather than just innuendo.

Secondly, Hamas cannot be expected to confront (with force, presumably) other militant groups who are on their side. That is simply not a realistic demand.

Thirdly, one passage from one of your quotes says:

“Also on Tuesday, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, a London-based Arabic-language daily, quoted Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as saying that if the smuggling of weapons into Gaza does not cease, Israel will consider the cease-fire agreement violated, and will be forced to respond militarily. Hamas has said it will not stop smuggling weapons.”

Here, Israel is the one threatening to end the ceasefire. Presumably, Isreal is free to continue importing arms while Hamas must stop smuggling bottle rockets (or whatever it is they are using now) – hardly a fair or reasonable demand.

This passage, from another report, is also interesting. I note that it wasn't one of the bolded passages:

“Since the Hamas takeover, more than 400 Palestinians, including dozens of civilians, and seven Israelis have been killed in tit-for-tat fighting....“

This too is interesting: “in a text message sent to reporters, [the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade] said "the truce must include the West Bank and all sorts of aggression must stop",“ which sounds reasonable enough to me, even though I deplore the way they highlighted the demand.

Also, to suggest that the bulldozer incident is a terrorist attack is highly disingenuous. We had a rather similar incident in Irealnd with a bus not so long ago – one woman was killed – but it was not a terrorist incident. In fact there is no evidence to connect the bulldozer driver with terrorism. Since he was executed on the spot by Israeli police we will never know.

Finally, I have seen no reports about whether or not any negotiations are taking /have taken place. Are they? If not, why not?
4  Political Discussions / Middle East / Re: Should Israel re-invade Gaza strip so Fatah can gai ncontrol over there? on: July 03, 2008, 02:49:04 PM
realityman, which exact brings us back to the topic of re-occupation of Gaza just this time with more legitimation.
Moreover Israel shown that Hamas cannot control others as well as other fractions cannot control Hamas.

Important lesson from that is that neither of Palestinians/Arabs want peace but to screw each other by killing more Jews....

You're correct... And a re-occupation of Gaza may ultimately be the only option to stop Hamas and their Kassams.... Certainly Fatah/Abbas isn't going to do it, and has already demonstrated their lack of authority over Hamas by losing control of Gaza to them... And should this current cease fire go the way of so many others before, Israel is certainly not going to sit around while Kassams continue to rain down on them... Certainly a re-occupation of Gaza isn't a desired option, but it may become necessary.. Meanwhile we can hold out hope that this cease fire amounts to something more, however unlikely that might be.

An occupation would be OK in the short term if Israel could do it without murdering a bunch of innocent people. But they have never done that and have no intention of doing so. Israel punishes the Palestinians for voting for Hamas, and everyone knows it.
5  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Obama to 'refine' Iraq plan - I.E. Flip, Flop.... on: July 03, 2008, 02:39:46 PM
Yeah "refining" his plans to withdrawl Reaganite. It says nothing about staying in Iraq.He wants to get the troops out of there in the best and safest possible way so he's talking to military leaders. Sounds like good  responsible planning to me.

Agreed.

Can you identify who these whites are?...what companies or families?....national origin?

The "White" people of earth aren't necessarily united and cohesive.
This is true, however they generally perceive all Caucasians to be disproportionately wealthy and imperialistic.

An alternative to military intervention might be for the west to arm the opposition to Zanu-PF and allow them to sort it out for themselves.
Seems viable. Indirect intervention is probably best, and may I suggest UN peacekeeping as well?

It won't happen, unless they discover oil in Zimbabwe.

Yes, sanctions will not accomplish anything. Rather than using force though, perhaps the West can diplomatically promote democratic change throughout Africa while waiting for Mugabe to die.

The problem is that Mugabe's death would not necessarily bring an end to the junta. His Zanu-PF party is the only armed group in the country and I can't see them giving up power and return to democracy. The best chance of that would be if there was a power struggle within the junta.

An alternative to military intervention might be for the west to arm the opposition to Zanu-PF and allow them to sort it out for themselves.

News update: Robert Mugabe has claimed victory. Obviously this does not improve his credibility in the slightest, as people were literally held at gun point and forced to vote for him.

As in many dictatorships, this was a democratic election with one candidate. It is evident that only death will remove Mr. Mugabe from power. Does anyone have any ideas as to how the world community can support the Zimbabwean people?

Military intervention is the only solution. Sanctions cannot work since Mugabe doesn't care about his people.

It's big news over here (in Ireland).
10  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Capital punishment; rape and paedophilia! on: June 27, 2008, 11:54:08 AM
Only warning citizens that forcible rape would be extremely punished, will decrease incidence to lowest rate possible-
what kind of justice and penalty is made  when you get a guy like Alan Horowitz jailed (welcomed in 5 stars prison) than freed to continue his predator behavior  raping 41 children- the state is responsible on the future victims.

For most people, the threat of prison is enough of a deterrent. Those for whom it isn't usually don't consider the possibility of getting caught, or don't care because their urges are too strong (there are treatments for this). Thus, the death penalty is no more of a deterrent than a lengthy prison sentence.
11  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Capital punishment; rape and paedophilia! on: June 26, 2008, 01:11:23 PM
How to explain that countries that get such penalties have less crimes than US?

Countries that don't have state murder of criminals also have low crime rates. There is no deterrent effect of capital punishment whatsoever.

There's no need to be triumphalist.

14  Political Discussions / United States / Re: polygamist marriage on: June 25, 2008, 12:09:16 PM
Interesting topic tadpol.  Especially considering the choices some might personally. If one goes back to some of Charlie's points you may find it's one more issue that is all about the money with his discussion of DOMA.  Since bigamy is illegal, though there remain many living in polygamous families such as those in TX, AZ and UT, specifically among those who
follow Mormon beliefs even though illegal, how many with single mothers, though the father is hardly absent, are collecting AFDC.
I follow LDS (A.K.A. Mormon) teachings and that isn't one of them.  That ended 100+ years ago and it gets you excommunicated today.  I attend church regularly and the last member of my church I met who even hinted that a that practice would be a good thing to go back to supporting was someone nutty who I met over ten years ago.  This is even the case among members of my faith who are descendants of people involved in "plural marriage"(I'm one of them).  The only "Mormons" involved in such things are splinter groups who left over a century ago.  They might call themselves "Mormons", but few LDS people would call them that.

Ok, here's a question: from a Mormon point of view, what precisely is wrong with polygamy?
15  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Creationism/evolutionism in schools! on: June 23, 2008, 12:55:15 PM
A biology professor did pose this question to my class once: Where did the first cell come from? It's unanswerable of course, I think both should be given thought.

It is not unanswerable. We do not know the answer, but that is a different thing entirely.

Do you mine PMing that too me then? I've not heard a legitimate answer to this... ever.

And I'm an Atheist.

The answer to what?
