1  Political Discussions / United States / Re: President Obama and his A.G. on: May 16, 2008, 11:20:16 AM
freethinker, progressivism my ass. Those things you listed arent singularly good, and if you think so then youre a fool. Besides, progressivism is not only a contradictory statement but its also an ideology which harms people at least as much as it helps. The word too lacks utility and you know damn well that its as common a slogan as change. Now, I live in a "progressive" state, Massachusetts. Where I live is in a tourist community that by the progressive ideals is keeping a large segment of the population from being able to afford housing. This also decreases the amount of population that is available to start new businesses, and the younger lot here are spending here what would be a third as much anywhere else in the country (except in maybe california) on housing. And national parks, they should be privatized. Sure, put some regulations on them, but privatized none the less. People would go after them to make them parks, as theyd still be money making, plus they wouldnt be federally subsidized. Heres to your progressive ideals that are keeping young families from being able to afford a decent lifestyle, freethinker.

What is it in your neocon pinhead that makes you think the balance of power in the senate and house will remain as it is now Bonzonite? As Americans have come to realize how incompetent and wrong headed the GOP is and has been the shift will be dramatic. Obamas congress will be more progressive than any seen in recent memory. The Mississippi election where the GOP held the seat since 1994 wasn't even close. It was but a harbinger of  the congressional changes to come.

Progressivism... progress is one of the worst words today in common culture. It lacks utility. Same as change. We could progress towards having a society where the currency was turnips. We could change the laws so that half of all people had the right to pick out the eyes of the other half. These things mean nothing. Stop using those words. The only people that fall for these broad, undefined notions are fools. Single issues and policies are what we need to debate about, and youre not doing it.

Quote from: Reaganite
On the other hand what I do have an issue with is if gays can get married in order to get access to health care, child custody and such then why cant two roomates who are not sleeping together?   Why cant two friends that don't live together and kissed once when they were 17 get "married" in order to get a break in taxes and buy a two family house together where they can share health care expenses?

How does this at all apply? Why is the problem with the legality of marriage with SSM and not with the federal subsidizing of health care and other benefits through frivilous expenditures such as SS? I dont see a problem in the marriage aspect. Much moreso SS, Medicare and Medicaid.
4  Social Discussions / Philosophy and Religion / Re: Moraly, What's worse: Pornography or Prostitution? on: May 10, 2008, 09:46:47 AM
Patton: The way I see religion is like the way that Paul Tillich describes it; he says that religion is a persons ultimate concern. The ultimate concern could very well be the religious principles they live under, like following the bible or whatever. Just write a list of the top 10 important things to you. The #1 should be your religion. A lot of people choose their family, their health, their faith and their happiness as important to them. You can see why these things could be seen as religions, as a lot of people mold their lifestyles around their personal interests. I see religious people all the time. My father for example is religious in his nature to his protection of his family. He works hard and provides for us. He doesnt go to an organized church, but then, a church is really where someone comes to pray and be holy. Its not holy until the people go there to make holy (or at least thats how muslims think). I suppose his church could be our home.

Philosophical, anyone?
5  Social Discussions / Philosophy and Religion / Re: Moraly, What's worse: Pornography or Prostitution? on: May 09, 2008, 09:53:03 AM
Patton: As a conservative, I see the conservative movement going back to the beginning of the USA. Minimal government involvement, lower taxes, you know. Not so many of the christian values, though I tend to associate more so with judaism and buddhism. Basically I dont care what other people do as long as they arent getting in the way of my living my own life the way I want to. I also view religion as a highly subjective thing, being somewhat outside of mainstream judaism, while taking more of the cultural values from them and my spiritual beliefs from buddhism, though without a lot of their supernatural aspects. I do enjoy porn and would find being with a hooker to be an interesting experience, and morally, I dont see them as infringing upon other peoples rights/freedoms.
6  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Black Racism in Democratic Primaries on: May 09, 2008, 08:04:47 AM
Im not saying its a good or a bad thing, just asking peoples opinions, and whether they see the correlation or not.
7  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Black Racism in Democratic Primaries on: May 09, 2008, 07:14:43 AM
Not so. Other races show very different numbers, and certain numbers of blacks also voted for her, as you can see here:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/scorecard/

In North Carolina for example, where 34% of the population was black, with 92% of the black democrats voting for obama, it would only require that 28% of the rest of the population vote for him. McCain is irrelevant also, and it would seem Clinton is well liked enough to keep getting delegates. Some people must like her. Also, I dont feel shes appealing as a candidate, but do feel that shes better than obama, though McCain is the least bad.

You dont seem to be able to do anything but spout out irrelevant information. This is not a case study of you. It is the study of numbers across a large scale. Numbers do not lie, and race is a relevant and prevalent factor in this presidential candidacy. I doubt you could speak for all black people more than I could given a lack of information, but the information is right before you. I appreciate that you dont agree with me, but calling me a racist doesnt refute the evidence.
9  Political Discussions / The Environment / Re: 100 Climate Scientists Write UN to say Global Warming is Bunk on: May 09, 2008, 06:36:36 AM
Lulz, I am going to have to agree with the because of my own views on the issue, those being that there is not a correlation and that the supplied data is not adequate to make such a distinction. Im wondering if anyone knows about the case in the british court with the Inconvenient Truth being found as having 9 material errors of large respects, and its being banned from public schools as political indoctrination.

Quote
    *  The film claims that melting snows on Mount Kilimanjaro evidence global warming.  The Government’s expert was forced to concede that this is not correct.
    * The film suggests that evidence from ice cores proves that rising CO2 causes temperature increases over 650,000 years.  The Court found that the film was misleading: over that period the rises in CO2 lagged behind the temperature rises by 800-2000 years.
    * The film uses emotive images of Hurricane Katrina and suggests that this has been caused by global warming.  The Government’s expert had to accept that it was “not possible” to attribute one-off events to global warming.
    * The film shows the drying up of Lake Chad and claims that this was caused by global warming.  The Government’s expert had to accept that this was not the case.
    * The film claims that a study showed that polar bears had drowned due to disappearing arctic ice.  It turned out that Mr Gore had misread the study: in fact four polar bears drowned and this was because of a particularly violent storm.
    * The film threatens that global warming could stop the Gulf Stream throwing Europe into an ice age: the Claimant’s evidence was that this was a scientific impossibility.
    * The film blames global warming for species losses including coral reef bleaching.  The Government could not find any evidence to support this claim.
    * The film suggests that sea levels could rise by 7m causing the displacement of millions of people. In fact the evidence is that sea levels are expected to rise by about 40cm over the next hundred years and that there is no such threat of massive migration.
    * The film claims that rising sea levels has caused the evacuation of certain Pacific islands to New Zealand.  The Government are unable to substantiate this and the Court observed that this appears to be a false claim.

Full transcript of the case at the bottom of the page. Actually, this reminds me of a debate I had with a teacher of mine who thought there was global warming. He held the scientists who opposed his views in one respect, and one respect only, saying they were all payed off by large corporations or being forced to talk that way by the government.

Just to make it clear, what is it about my argument that you find wanting? Is it that you think Im a racist, or that you find some fault in it? There is a pattern, and unless youre willing to understand that race is a part of it then youre not going to be able to think about it in an objective manner.
11  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Black Racism in Democratic Primaries on: May 09, 2008, 06:17:23 AM
Machioveli: Not all the other votes come from white. They come from a multitude of different ethnicities and races, including hispanic peoples, latinos, asians and others. There are also people of more than one race, such as Barack Obama. Also, your charge of my having racism bears little credence as I am not putting down anyone. You dont even know the color of my skin. Thomas Sowell is black, and I dont doubt at all that he holds similar views as my own.

That said, I take the things into account that you are saying. Numbers dont lie. No candidate has ever gotten this sort of support from any demographic. 92% is amazing. Your contribution is that my recognition that there has to be some reason for this as being racist... thats just silly. If you can tell me that you dont think his race has anything to do with this, that if he was white, then your point may be well taken, but dont insult me when you dont know me. Your assumptions about a person you dont know show more hostility and lack of clear understanding that is key in separating us from people who would discriminate based on race. Im on your side, so cool it, dave.
12  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Black Racism in Democratic Primaries on: May 08, 2008, 09:57:51 PM
Because of the large divide between blacks and everyone else about who they support, with african americans generally voting for Obama. Im not saying that if they were voting issue based itd be a problem, but I dont feel that 90% of any group could realistically agree with all the issues any one person puts down. Because hes a member of their race, and because its such an issue in the campaign makes me think that racism by blacks, wanting to see another black in office is the cause of his large support. The racism is in choosing based on race. And if you say its because they percieve hes gonna give preferential treatment/policies or represent them in a different way because theyre black, then I also accept that as an acceptance of racism.

As a conservative and a religious man, Im inclined to say that morally, both dont matter. I dont care what other people choose to do and fully support their right to do so as long as they arent sticking it in my face. I enjoy porn though, and wouldnt discount the possibility of being with a hooker at some point. I wouldnt imagine it as a regular event though. Morally, hey, its not that bad.
14  Political Discussions / United States / Black Racism in Democratic Primaries on: May 08, 2008, 09:33:30 PM
As Im sure you are all aware, Obama has a great lead among the African Americans. Here are the leads in a few states: Percentages of black voters voting obama-

NC: 92%
IN: 90%
AL: 83%
PA: 85%
TX: 85%
OH: 88%

Now, they were saying on npr a few days ago how there was racism at play in the whites in Indiana because Obama had lost the white vote 40-60%. What Im proposing is that the feeling of blacks that Obama would better represent their issues, which is why he is getting such support amongst them, as no white candidate has ever gotten 90% of the white vote, is racist. So how do yall feel about racially motivated voting? For or against?
15  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Whats the muck on Hillery? on: May 08, 2008, 09:29:17 PM
What does the republicon scum machine have on Hillery that makes them so sure McCain can beat her?

Actually, we are pretty sure hes gonna get the nomination. Were just pushing for her to stay in the game so that the democrats divide themselves further. Obama is seen as easy pickings because we see him as a bad character with weak foundations, and this as something which can be easily advertised later on.
