don't try to rationalize suffering by using some oblique statement. If you truely believe that war is hell and we should forget about casualties then we shouldn't care about 9/11 or those who die in Iraq. War is hell, yea, this does not lessen the suffering on both sides and it does not justify conquest.

We do know they DID invade, meaning they weren't the first population and we can be fairly sure that God didn't tell them to do so. Unless you are saying that Jesus's dad told the Jews to conquer, rape and pillage?

Social Discussions / Philosophy and Religion / The Soul?

My primary question about the soul is when exactly does it "start" or enter the body? For those who believe in this concept it is an important concept because of the discoveries in stem cell research and cloning. If a soul enters the zygote and then splits into identical twins what happens to the soul? Does each have half a soul, or what if two fertilized eggs meld together forming a single zygote?
If there is such a thing as a soul when does it begin, if ever, and how does it come into control of our bodies?

Depending on which "faith" you are talking about...
I generally have "faith" in democracy and the rule of law, however sometimes I see that masses of people are tricked into giving up that right under the guise of democracy. So I have "faith" of a kind, because it can be tested whether or not democracies are more humane contries than others. In general this IS the case.
I do NOT have "faith" in prayer. Primarily because there have been scienntific tests on the subject and the only effect is a placebo effect, something easily replaced with a loving family or community.

Well if we want to talk bible...
Biblical history says that the Jews invaded Palestine (because "God" told them too). They killed the men over 14 and took the women as concubines. Not only is the ancient Jewish claim to the land immoral but it confirms that the ethnic Palestinians were there "first".
To the spoils of war, the victor. ...that is not all the bible says about the Jews and their birthright. what other biblical mythologies would you have us believe? From what I have gathered so far you believe that all of Israel should be given to Zionist Jews, all Muslims want to violently take over the rest of the world, and that morality should have no bearing on political decisions...

This was a hot topic when I was in Egypt in January; however, the fact of the matter is that Egypt has much more pressing issues to focus its resources on than this, like access to clean water, dealing with the unemployment, constant threat of terrorism, and the overflowing problem in Gaza.
I sure hope Egypt gets Gaza as a 'gift'. Then they can completely wall them off with the only access by sea and sell them all the electricity, oil, and other goods until they wake up to themselves and start to produce their own economy. -Terry Sure would be nice the occupiers of Gaza would allow them to build their economy... I find it hard to believe Egypt would be worse than Israel in this area.

Untouchables, there is nothing democratic about Islam. Never was and never will be. Not as long as there are radical Islamists and Sharia law..
-Terry
This statement is completely ignorant of Islamic history. Not only were the Islamic Ottomans more democratic than Europe for their time but they were more advanced scientifically and culturally.

Social Discussions / Philosophy and Religion / Re: anti-blasphemy laws- vital or not!

Antiblasphemy laws are indeed exist in many countries; I think in 2005-2006 a rock concert blaspheming God name in Germany was forbidden by authority!
However those laws are quite discreet and not really activated as anti-diffamation rules!
If that is true it is most likley stopped because it would offend too many people, ever since a particular instance Germany has been carefull to not be too offensive. I wonder why...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say we Americans have too much freedom and not enough democracy.
As a democracy we have decided that we do not have the right to exploit others, we don't have the freedom to kill people, we don't have the freedom to steal, we don't have the right to be imune to radical and offensive ideas...
There ARE freedoms we should choose to destroy so long as we choose them as a society.
You do not have the right to own 2 homes, 4 cars and a yacht while not paying taxes to help those that don't have a home...
