91  Social Discussions / Philosophy and Religion / Re: Monotheism and Polytheism both such silly concepts on: February 08, 2008, 08:34:00 PM
.....there is no scientific evidence for or against it. However If we want to argue about particular religious beliefs then it it quite easy to disprove them.

For example....

Can you provide any scientific evidence for the belief in a God?
92  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Did the United States lose the Vietnam War? on: February 08, 2008, 10:43:03 AM
Given that U.S. political goals were to prevent the spread of communism it was a failure.
93  Social Discussions / Philosophy and Religion / Re: Monotheism and Polytheism both such silly concepts on: February 08, 2008, 10:30:34 AM
There are a few ways to get around the infinity arguement, one of them is that She exists outside of the universe, another is that God IS the universe.

Either of these 2 hypothesis are scientifically inverifiable and the statements must be taken on faith. Believe it if you want, there is no scientific evidence for or against it. However If we want to argue about particular religious beliefs then it it quite easy to disprove them.

in Polytheism there is generally one God that is more powerfull than the others while existing in some sort of heaven beyond our understanding, while the 'sub'-Gods are in charge of particular events. (like hurricanes or love making)

94  Political Discussions / Middle East / Re: Modern Day Terrorism. What is it, and what groups are Involved and Where? on: February 08, 2008, 08:42:34 AM
Perhaps. I find your definition earlier -- dispite it obvious lust to find the US guitly of terrorism (or anything)-- much more realistic. Assassinations, clandestine overthrows and so forth come closer to the definition for me.

The A-Bomb example is the sort of thing an elementary student from a former Eastern Bloc school for the exceptionally brainwashed would come up with. (...waitaminute...).

Ahk

The definition 'I' provided is from the United States Government... if the U.S. has been guilty of terrorism then it is by it's own definition. I have no lust to label my country as a terrorist state but rather to make people understand that the U.S. has faults as well. This is the real world and states are violent and cruel.
95  Political Discussions / Middle East / Re: Is Palestine realy under Israeli Occupation? on: February 08, 2008, 08:36:02 AM
"who do you think is really responsible for the condition in which Gaza is in today?"

well it depends how far back you want to trace it, lol.

We could say it is the Palestinians who have no central organization, security, or wealth.

Or

We could say it was the U.N. which gave Israel a state where none existed.

Or

We could say it was Hitler for killing so many people and showing the plight that Jews face

Or

We could say it was the Romans for kicking the Jews out of Israel

Or

We could say it was God for inventing people!

We can rationalize "who" is guilty but the plane fact is that there are extremists on all sides that refuse to give an inch for a peacefull resolution. It is everyones fault for the terror and it is everyones fault for the military occupation.
96  Political Discussions / Middle East / Re: Islamists & democracy: coexistence on: February 08, 2008, 08:30:13 AM
It is valid to point out that vast majority of Islamists are average people that want to free themselves from Dictatorship. These totalitarian regiemes are supported by the west (and Russia) and the people of the Middle East are resisting. Islamists are the same as Evangelicals, they both pose some threat to secular democracy but they do not oppose democracy itself.

no, the mainstream definition of terrorism is when a small group in the minority is not satisfied and uses violence to make up for what they lack in popular support, even against the wishes of the people they claim to be fighting for.

by this definition Vietnam was a war of terror in the later years
98  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Did the United States lose the Vietnam War? on: February 07, 2008, 10:43:18 PM
The lesson that should have been learned in Viet Nam is that a war the people do not want or need is unwinnable . Without the will and sacrifice of the entire country any protracted conflict is doomed to failure. Junior was too busy leaning over a coke mirror or staring into his beer bottle to have caught that lesson. After 911 he thought that he could instill and maintain enough fear in the American people to pull it off and attain the goals  the neocons wanted from Iraq.
But the American people aren't that gullible ...at least not forever. Once duped they take action against those who took advantage of their willingness to trust. This what we are seeing now in this primary. I suspect we will see it for many years to come.

Thank you Terry.

Federal Criminal Code. Chapter 113B of Part I of Title 18 of the United States Code defines terrorism as...

…activities that involve violent… or life-threatening acts… that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State and… appear to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and… (C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States… [or]… (C) occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States…"

Activities that involve violent or life-threatening acts that are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population or government via mass destruction or assassination.

It is NOT ONLY the U.S. that has engaged in state terror. Fortunatly for the world our government has tempered our abilities to incite terror.

Or... our troops were pulled because the American people did not want to continue the worthless bloodshed.

Hiroshima was not a terrorist act.

by the mainstream definition that terrorism is deliberate targeting of civilians with the purpose of capitalizing on the psychological effect, yes Hiroshima was a classical terror attack. The Allies DID call the civilian-targeting air raids on Germany and Japan "terror bombings". The Aug 1945 nuclear attack targeted population and nothing but population. It's goal was to mortify as many civilians as possible and force Japan's surrender due to the psychological effect. Most pure distilled terrorism. It's good that this spared your father, but this fact does not alter the applicability of the term to the action.

Quote
The Japanese would have been happy to nuke Tacoma, Washington

sure. They covered with corpses any land they conquered. But the evil prevented by terror attack does not retroactively abolish the applicability of definition to the action.

Exactly true, these nuclear attacks WERE terrorism. Whether or not they were justified is up for conversation, but I believe they were.

Now, if the Red Army Faction had a nuke...

they wouldn't use it unless they found a huge concentration of burgeiousie. They were leftist targeting industrial magnates, bankers and politicians. Killing a million of proletarian assholes was counterintuitive to their doctrine. Toiling masses can not be liberated by nukes.

Depending on the leader of the time maybe or maybe not. Lenin and Stalin surely had no qualms, or remorse, for killing innocents if they get in the way of destroying the Bourgeoisie. In their policies they tried to avoid it but if a million people had to die to ensure freedom from Capitalist Imperialism then they would sacrifice them.

Communism was an ideology that attempted to release the world from the inherent inequality of Capitalism. Unfortunatly the conflict between Capitalism and Communism lead to millions of deaths. Terrorism is a tool used by all...
102  Political Discussions / United States / Re: "Superdelegates": another distortion of democracy principles on: February 06, 2008, 10:07:17 PM
Why not just nix the primaries....just have one big general election...anyone can vote for anyone regardless of political affiliation, most votes wins....so the ballot would look a little like:

-Joe Biden

-Sam Brownback

-Hillary Clinton

-Christopher Dodd

-John Edwards

-Rudy Giuliani

-Mike Huckabee

-Duncan Hunter

-Alan Keyes

-Dennis Kucinich

-John McCain

-Barack Obama

-Ron Paul

-Bill Richardson

-Mitt Romney

-Tom Tancredo

-Fred Thompson

-None of the above*

*If this choice gets the most votes, Patton wins it all.

For once Patton I completely agree (minus the patton for president Grin)
103  Political Discussions / United States / Re: "Yes we can" video on: February 06, 2008, 08:30:34 AM
I used to agree that too many Americans are racist, especially coming from an extreemly conservative republican area. But after seeing what has happened so far I think that the desire for change and hope outweights any subtle racism that exists. Obvious racism, that we have been seeing on this forum latley, is self defeating when it comes to national politics.

So yes, Obama can win and I hope he does.
104  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Study: WH's lies record! on: February 06, 2008, 08:26:02 AM
So your saying that no one in the current administration has ever lied or distorted the truth about ANYTHING? Even I lie once in a while

105  Political Discussions / United States / Re: Peak Oil? Think Again on: February 06, 2008, 06:36:15 AM
except that oil is made biologically and is not a natural mineral like gold. There is far less oil than natural minerals and it will run out eventually.
