It's just the world upside down in Saudi Arabia.

Note that the rapers get 2 to 9 years in jail. Yes, but when you have consenting sex outside marriage you are beheaded. So raping is punished by a few years and consenting intercourse by the death penalty.
Hallucinating!

Saudi defends verdict against gang-rape victim

RIYADH  - Saudi Arabia defended on Saturday a court's decision to sentence a woman who was gang-raped to 200 lashes, saying she was having an extramarital affair in violation of Islamic laws.

The case of the 19-year-old Shi'ite woman who was abducted and raped along with a male companion by seven men has drawn international attention. Even the United States, a close ally of the conservative kingdom, offered mild criticism of the verdict.

"The woman in the case is married and has confessed to establishing a relationship in violation of (Islamic) sharia law," the Saudi justice ministry said in a statement. It said she and her companion had been alone in a dark area outdoors, when they were noticed by the men who later raped them.

Ruling according to Saudi Arabia's strict reading of Islamic law, a court had originally sentenced the woman to 90 lashes for being alone with an unrelated man and the rapists to jail terms of up to five years.

Last week the Supreme Judicial Council increased the sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison and ordered the rapists to serve between two and nine years in jail.

The ruling provoked rare criticism from the United States, which has invited Saudi Arabia to attend a Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland next week.

A State Department spokesman told reporters on Monday that "most (people) would find this relatively astonishing that something like this happens."

The court also took disciplinary action against the woman's lawyer, Abdul-Rahman al-Lahem, forcibly removing him from the case for having talked about it to the media.

"We reiterate that that judicial rulings in this virtuous country ... are based on God's book (the Koran) and the traditions of his Prophet (Mohammad) and that no ruling is issued without being based on evidence ...," said Saturday's statement, carried by the official news agency SPA.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has called on King Abdullah, who last month announced plans to overhaul the system, to drop all charges against the woman.

The Saudi legal system is dominated by clerics who adhere to the kingdom's austere Sunni interpretation of Islamic law. Personal status law remains uncodified and the system does not recognize the concept of precedent.

Actually, the punishment is for being secluded with a man not in her immediate family.

Barbaric nevertheless.

They recentley released 1500 AQ extremist terrorist suspects (after obtaining a pledge to not attack infidels....in Saudi Arabia) and have beheaded 136 people this year to apparentley make plenty of room for rape victims.

Yep this verdict is erratic and even anti-islamic, if my datas are right the Sharia forbid any punishment or blaming against rape victims...
Quote
There is no rule in Islam requiring a rape victim to forgive the rapist, but in some jurisdictions, if the victim forgave the rapist, the rapist’s punishment might be reduced from execution to, say, flogging and incarceration.

Rape is a grave sin and a major legal crime on the part of the assailant, and if legally proven it may be punishable by death. The assaulted woman, however, would not be considered a sinner, since she was overwhelmed and could not be blamed for it. The Quranic rule applies: "If one is forced, without wilful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then he is guiltless, For God is Oft-Forgiving Most-Merciful. ' , (2:173)
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Islam-947/Rape-Islam.htm

the rapists close shave from death too!!
I think There is a hidden things in this story!, maybe the agressors were close to the princes family; so the little girl should pay the invoice  Sad

with the insistence of the authority it's clearly a political verdict not a shariaa decision.

Sherazad,

In this case she is not blamed for an intercourse with the rapists, but with her boyfriend.
Yet they punish her a second time as if a gang rape was not enough.

Ok, if she really confessed she's reponsible of her behavior with her friend; ..however why she was double punished?!

And according to the law any rapists should put to death, not jailed!- curious

That's the contreversy: For radical-islamists, gang-raping an adultery woman (was her boyfriend also raped is unclear...) is not having sex, it's giving a punishment in the name of honnor and morality Angry.

The problem here is that the  court is held by a bunch of no-less-radical clerics who would have done just the same police.

Finaly...

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has pardoned the victim of a gang-rape whose sentencing to 200 lashes caused an international outcry, the official news agency said on Monday.

The victim's husband welcomed the news. "I'm happy and my wife is happy and it will of course help lift some of her psychological and social suffering," he told Reuters. "We thank the king for his generous attention and fatherly spirit."
