It was done VERY well, with a minimalistic idea toward the entire production. The actors were all on stage at the same time and each one played an instrument. If they weren't singing they were playing. The set never changed and everyone wore dark, ominous costumes. It is deffinately one of my favorites (my families big into the arts, so we see a lot of shows). Anyway, Tim Burton (one of my favorite movie makers) is doing it... and I couldn't have asked for anyone better. And Jhonny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett respectfully will make the entire movie. If you don't know anything about Sweeney Todd, then I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe the preview will make you interested.

A weird, dark movie directed by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter? What an amazing, originial idea!
I bet you $100 that Danny Elfman did the music.

I know it looks like Tim Burton's movies... but I like Tim Burton's movie.
And hell, I like Elfman's music, but the score and lyrics were from the original, by Sondheim.

Damn, Elfman would've been the only selling point for me. My girlfriend is obsessed with Burton/Depp, so I'm sure I'll see it at some point.

Elfman may have contributed to the songs from the broadway musical specifically for Burton. We all sure as hell know that he wasn't busy with Spiderman 3.

I am really looking forward to this movie as well. I have never seen it on stage, but I know the story and have listened to the music. Besides, I think they did perfect with the casting for this one.

You're not the kinda person who thinks gay people see musicals, are you? Hugh Jackman was in one. "Oklahoma", of all shows. You wanna call him gay?  Just look at the story for "Sweeney Todd". It's about a barbor who slits the throats of his customers. The bodies are then baked into meat pies by the lady downstairs. This isn't "Cats" by any stretch of the imagination. |

Oh no no. Nothing to do with the characterization of my manhood.
I just can't seem to make the connection between the emotion put through the songs being sung in the context of some of the stories. It just for some reason makes me feel uncomfortable.
I guess it is something I just don't understand considering I have never been to one. But when singing starts happening during movies I usually don't feel well no matter what context.

Its OK. I am a huge fan of the arts. In fact I love theater. But musical theater is when I get uncomfortable. I dunno why. I have a huge appreciation for opera after studying it and most plebeian theater has sung stanzas and I actually enjoy that. It could be the fact that musicals puts on a superficial tone that ruins the context of what a good story could be. I guess I am more into the dreary so maybe Sweeney Todd is a good transition. However, I think it might just be that the actual music in musicals...is crappy music. No offense. |
