Relations between France and the US have been damaged unecessarily
if refusal to give Americans carte blanche for illegal war is damaging the relations, i wonder what the relations are. They say in Canada we damaged relations with the US by refusing to invade Iraq. Oh well. It's "either u're with us or against us" system; war is peace, the attacker is the defender, absense of evidence is evidense of presense, neutrality is aggression.
French opposed the war on Iraq because of their interrest with the regime of Saddam Hussein. That in turn hurt their interrest with the US (thought by a much smaler extent IMO) and that's what Sarkozy has been fixing.
I don't think that Islamist sentiment is worse in France than in Spain or Britain.
hopefully stays this way by virtue of abstaining from invasions in Dar ul Islam. When France messed into Algerian politics, something happened in the Paris subway. The cost for messing into Iraq would have been far higher. But Sarkozy seems generous about paying the costs out of the French pocket.
If you invade a foreign country, you can expect some retaliation. I agree.
But France is not more exposed than any other country to islamoterrorism and actualy I think they are less exposed than Britain and Spain thanks to a better cultural relation with the arab/muslim world and the very low level of religiousity of the french muslims.
