I'd post a link, but there's too many to link to.  Someone posted this challenge egging on atheists to deny the existance and power of the holy spirit, which is described in the book of Mark as the 'unforgivable sin'.  It's all over youtube, hundreds of people, mostly teenagers, denying the existance of the holy spirit.  Sometimes they throw in God, angels, Allah, Shiva, Gonesha, Santa, the Easter Bunny, etc.

Any thoughts?

I think it's funny, but fleeting.  It's probably a big deal for some to finally break free from the yoke of the intellectual terrorism of religion (especially fear based religions, such as the Judeo-Christo-Islamo-Mormon family), but then they have to wake up to a stark reality:  That now the responsibility is on them to conduct their lives through thick and thin, instead of wishing it away to fate, or some Sky Creature.

So, I'm all for it since it is a huge step in taking responsibility for ones self and believing that you are permanently severing a tie to a life line.

But eventually you realize it is all a fantasy - the life line was never there and your grand moment was really nothing more than saying "I deny the Power of Greyskull!"

As I have said, Religion is like an Extreme Book Club. This is like going to a Star Trek convention and yelling: "I deny the Power of Q".

It only means something to the people who feel it has meaning, but it means little in the long run.  Life goes on and denying that Jesus is special is hardly as big a deal as getting a job, buying a house, having friends, etc.

You know.  Things that are real.

I think this is one of the worst ideas the atheist community has ever had (I heard about it months ago BTW). It simply reinforces the idea that atheists are angry at God, or are rebelling against God (esp. because it is mostly teens).

I think when we say something they disagree with, they chalk it up to our anger but never their own fear.

But your point is well taken.

however, we could say that this shows that atheists are qute light-hearted and funny. They are taking it as a doddle. As a joke.

"I reject the Holy Spirit" is the same as "I reject Galactica" or "I reject Santa".

Its fun because teenagers get to take control of their lives over their parents who tried to scare them into believing a lie.  Its a form of rebellion that strikes at the heart of religiots and means nothing to the person saying it (other than that feeling of rebellion).

I say more power to them!

But if we actually want to convince people this is the wrong way to go about it. People just wont listen because they yhink we're angry and obnoxious.

Yeah, but is that the image we really want to cultivate? I mean, John L already thinks atheism is just adolescent rebellion.

I think that is more his problem than ours. Wink
