They don't seem to have a coherent strategy: One day it's a pipeline, one day a military barrack, one day voters... today it was the UN.
What do they want? Sharia law? Again?

UN review after Algiers bombing

Algiers, Alger, 12/12 - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has ordered a security review after a bomb in Algiers which was the deadliest attack on its offices since 2003.

At least 11 UN employees died when a car bomb blasted the facade of the UN refugee agency in the city on Tuesday.

A second bomb shattered an Algerian government office, reportedly killing and injuring students in a passing bus. Al-Qaeda`s North Africa wing claimed both attacks, which killed at least 26 people and injured nearly 180.

I think al-Qaeda's strength lies in its unpredictabliity. The fact that they are able to to be versatile with their 'targets' shows their ability to be flexible at the expense of innocent and not-so-innocent individuals, future prospects for peace as well as the reputation and standing of Islam as a 'religion for peace and tolerance'.

Nonetheless, it is these same 'strengths' that are/is proving to be their weaknesse.

Quote from:  - Al Qaeda's wing in north Africa
"After the apostates trumpeted their major campaign to comb the Bejaia area, for which they gathered more than 10,000 troops ... and claimed to surround the emir of the organization, and the enemy al-Shorouk newspaper ... told lies about the killing of 25 mujahideen ... we wish to present a summary of the utter failure of the apostates..." the group said.

"Most casualties were recorded among the apostates during the explosion of dozens of bombs that the mujahideen received them with... and their limbs went flying, two of their vehicles were charred and many of them fled like frightened rats..."

It's seems like a slow dirty conflict with one event every 6 months and no end in sicght.
The particularity of this movement is that they never end even when their cause has no chance of success. Fighting being the goal. Not achieving a political change or a revolution or anything tangible.

If Al Qaeda has no western targets, they attack anyone. That includes other Arab nations and other terrorist groups. Really, they don't care, maybe because the countries they were spawned in won't let them back in (ie. KSA). 9/11 was a frustrated lashing out directed not only at America, but to the Saudi's as well, as the KSA and the U.S. have maintained excellent relations.

Other than the above hypothesis, they are just plain crazy jihadists.  Angry

they recruit only to kill. I feel really bad for Muslim nations that do not realize that they are only hurting them as a whole, yet most continue to support thier actions and others alike.
