I'm not saying it's the solution but until solar gets up to snuff, it's an EXCELLENT source for the interim.

Yes, more money needs to be put into research and yes, nuclear isn't the end-all-be-all some people think it is. But why can't we END foreign imports of oil and END our calamotous involvement in the Middle East by quickly switching to nuclear NOW.

If I'm not mistaken there is a recent movement to build several new reactors and USA Today did a front page article about it, though it was mostly an attempt to scare everyone away from the nuclear alternative by mentioning a handful of negative news.

They fail to mention the nearly spotless record of the US military and her nuclear carriers and boomers... or the possibility that increased competition among privately owned power companies may convince them to be more careful about security... or the fact that a recent attack on a South African reactor was thrawted by their security... or how bomb residue in the truck of a engineer was found, investigated and found to be benign, BEFORE it became a threat... or how nuclear energy has no carbon foot print.

Nuclear energy, in the mean time, is our only hope.

After that' it's solar.

I am not convinced that we need to spend the money on nuclear.  A strong case can be made for the spending of that money on R&D on true alternatives that would make them more practical in the real term.

I don't get what it is about solar that people feel is not acceptable at this time.  As I work in that field, I can tell you that you could power your house entirely with solar right now if you wanted...

The issue is time.

Two reasons: Upstart Cost and Efficiency - The former is too high and the latter is too low. Both can and will change, but I'm content to wait till they do. In the mean time, bring on the nukes.

That will have changed before you can even finish getting the build permits for your first nuclear plant.  And long before you finish construction and commission that plant.
