"Premarital sex is dangerous, even deadly. Let's not encourage it by vaccinating ten-year-olds so they think they're safe.''

-Senator Tom (move over, Mengele - I'm a doctor too) Coburn

From Michael Spector's The Bush Administration's war on the laboratory

This is symptomatic of the Bush Administration's rank propensity to appoint unqualified idealogues to oversee government agencies, particularly those involved with public health and education. The idea that the administration would hold up promoting an HPV vaccine that will prevent a significant percentage of cervical cancers because of some unsubstantiated fear of increased sexual activity is beyond insane.

This is a no brainer for me as a parent. If I can decrease the risk of my daughter getting cervical cancer she's getting the vaccine way before premarital sex becomes an issue.

Voluminious words don't make one perspicacious.

"Hey guys, I just got my tetanus shot!"
"Sweet! Let's go play in your uncle's pile of rusty wire!"

I just love this sentence:
"Premarital sex is dangerous, even deadly."
As though there are profound physiological differences between pre-marital sex and post-marital sex that makes the former "dangerous, even deadly". He makes it seem that unmarried women have sarlacc-like genitals or that you'll immediately end up making meth in your bathtub and robbing churches if you even consider having premarital sex.
