Way before the soviet invasion of 79, back sometime in the 50s Afghans tried to approach the US to buy arms and get military advisors etc. But since US had cultivated relations with Pakistan since almost day 1 and also since Afghanistan at the time was playing the big brother to peshtun in Pakistan the US chose not to deal with them. That's why they became the soviets client state. But after Daud overthrew the king and made peace with Pakistan and started approaching the west the soviets orchestrated a coup and invaded. Mind you the only reason that Afghanistan was in the Soviet sphere of influence all along was the US's refusal to deal with Afghanistan because of the discord between Afghanistan and Pakistan about the Peshtun...... Ahhhh! I knew it. I knew there was a reason it was the USs fault they invaded. "Soviet sphere of influence" is a good euphemism for invasion. Ahk

This does not explain why its the US's fault the USSR invaded. The Soviets just couldn't help themselves eh?
Look at the greif the US gets even today for monetarily supporting the Taliban vs the Soviets? Even if it was mostly Saudi money. If they didn't they still would've been blamed for not getting involved.
All avenues of blame lead to the US? Or only the ones worth mentioning?

as soon as Sir Mortimer Durand explained those Pashtu savages which of them were Afghans and which Indians, the bastards threw the carefully designed Durand Line to garbage. The swine don't comprehend the celestial benefits of this divine artefact of civility. They need to be reminded of them in appropriate manner, with bombs desirably. This outrageous disregard for national borders and national identities given to them by the White Man must stop. Just because you are a Pashtu savage who never heard of Sir Mortimer doesn't mean that you are entitled to walk into a neighbouring village to visit another Pashtu ape like yourself, for there is the Durand Line between the villages, and you, godless brute, need to internalize and praise the Border, like anything else bestowed upon you by the Master. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durand_Line

Where have I stated that it was the US's foult that USSR invaded Afghanistan? I was just stating a fact that Afghanistan was more or less shunned by the USA at some point in time. Which resulted in Afghanistan getting into soviet sphere, the invasion was only about 20 years after that event.... It seems everyone in this board is getting more and more paranoid... This does not explain why its the US's fault the USSR invaded. The Soviets just couldn't help themselves eh?

Finding a way for "it" to be the USA's fault is a big pastime around here. The CIA run the world, didn't you know? Unless it's on those occasions where they don't. Ahk

You are, I surmise. .. or are you just scared that this is not a Muslim site? I'm not paranoid, as long as I take my daily prozac and don't answer UT's posts!

Something I remember from my days at the War College.......if one was a strategic thinker.....and remembering the Soviet desire for an ever expanding sphere of influence....coupled with NEED for a OPEN warm water port to counter the 1981-87 Reagan-Lehman buildup to a 600 ship navy.....it is not hard to see that conquering and occupying Afghanistan was a logical step to cutting a swath through Pakistan to the Arabian Sea.

occupying Afghanistan was a logical step speculatively can be interpreted so. In pure naked facts it wasn't. The Afghan Commies made a move entirely on their own. And then asked for Soviet help. Brezhn and folks were angry they hadn't been consulted. Politbureau debated the aid request bitterly. Was nothing self-evident about the troops deployment. The minority hard-liners prevailed. The transcripts of the Politburo discussions over Afghanistan show how difficult the decision was. U need not speculate about the Soviet state of mind on that, - the transcripts make such speculations unnecessary. ""The decision to send troops was made after a long deliberation and repeated requests from the leadership of the PDPA, Prime Minister Hafizullah Amin and President Nur Mohammad Taraki. The Politburo discussions show that the Soviet leaders were very reluctant to send troops, and responded to the Afghan requests with shipments of military equipment, but not troops, throughout the spring and summer of 1979. However, the overthrow of Taraki.." http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB57/soviet.html

Thanks Peisi....a brilliant exercise in the unknowns behind the motivations of an "aggressor" nation...with nil intelligence operatives in Afghanistan or Moscow during this era...speculation was all there was...and of course...the War College is nothing but execises in strategic thinking.

Patton, Afghanistan was a Soviet client sate and was in their sphere of influence all along. The US had Pakistan and the Soviets courted the Afghans. Daud was deemed to be prowestern by internal factions in Afghanistan and a coup was undertaken. I can not say that the USSR was not a part of the coup (or that it was) but the coup was made by marxists in Afghanistan. I do doubt that the Russians would have been stupid enough to make a move on Pakistan, they would have had a shorter route to warm waters through the Bosphorus. If they would have been daring enough to make a move on Pakistan they may as well have attacked Turkey. Actually they did have lots of activities in Turkey. The 1970's is known as the period of anarchy in Turkey (especially 1977-1980). The KGB had alot in arming and training the Marxist youth and having them clash with the Nationalist youth movements (namely the greywolves, somewhat related to Turkish Gladio (or should we say stay behind network). In 1980 there was a military coup and that pretty much settled everything.

Completely stupid since it has almost nothing to do with anything. I know you think it does but it doesn't. For one thing there's no one stopping them from going between villages, even while armed, so like, wtf are you impliying? The Pakistan/Afghan border has always been easier to cross than the US/Can one. They've been doing it unhindered by bombs as you deceptively imply for years and still do. What you say here has absolutely fuck all to do with Taliban crossing borders, or Madrasses that are entirely located and run in Pakistan, sorry. "Don't push me cuz Im close to the edge..."... no, wait that doesn't quite fit. "Got a letter from the government the other day. Opened it. read it. it said they were suckers. they wanted me for their army or whatever, picture me giving a damn, I said never..."... no no wait. No that's not quite it either. Oh! I got it: And when his humble tv servant With humble white hair And humble glasses And a nice blue turban Or maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls Tells us our God says Its okay to do this stuff Then we gotta do it, cause if we dont do it, We better not plan on going to heaven
It says in the book: Burn n destroy... n repent, n redeem n revenge, n deploy n rumble thee forth To the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side cause they dont go for whats in the book n that makes em bad So verily we must choppeth them up And stompeth them down
Hey, we cant really be dumb If were just following gods orders Hey, lets get serious... God knows what hes doin He wrote this book here An the book says: He made us all to be just like him, So... If we're dumb... Then God is dumb... (an maybe even a little ugly on the side)"Bingo. Just take a look: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/02/06/iraq.main/index.htmlAhk
