I get off the bus a few stops late. Then walk home up a good-sized, gradual hill. Takes 30 minutes and I've usually broken a sweat. Then on weekends I jog three miles each day, unless I go for a bike ride.
That's all, and yet it keeps me in pretty good shape. I'm 51, and two weeks ago I went on a week-long backpacking trip on the east side of Mt. Rainier's Wonderland Trail with a 40-pound pack. I won't say it was a breeze, but I never felt like it was a struggle. I had more than enough left over to enjoy the amazing scenery.
I agree that sit-ups are really good for the back. I've read that keeping your core muscles in shape (like your abs) is important for your spine. I also try to limit the fat I eat.
The best news I've read about health is that the following are supposed to be good for you:
1) A glass of red wine a day--what could be better with dinner?
2) Dark chocolate
3) Coffee
What a great world!!!
