Probably because it would be pretty dry for all but a few students. It's best taught in Poli Sci courses in college, IMHO.

Why in heaven's name do many High School teachers insist on teaching dry, antiquated tomes to their poor, suffering students?
Why not help them learn what a joy reading can be with a great book?

I'd like to know what you all think might be good novels to teach High School kids. (Besides Harry Potter, since everyone has read it already).

I don't read a lot of fiction... so I got nothing.

Of the books we did in school that I liked, "To Kill A Mocking Bird" is at the top of my list.

Hated "Oedipus" and "Homer's Odyessy"...

But I'm having trouble remembering what else we did, which makes me think a lot of it was crap.

Well, I guess I liked Oedipus the first time I read it... but twice in high school and once again in College... it really made me loathe that story.

I think too many literature curriculums look the same, which is probably why I had to read it so much.

And Homer's Odessy just isn't my speed. It's one of those stories I couldn't wait to finish (cause it was as boring as all Hell), except just when you thought it was over... it wasn't. Personally, it was just too long.

I loved "A Great Train Robbery", "Beuwoulf" (movie looks pretty sweet too) and "The Crucible". There's a few more I liked, I just can't think of them.
