I don't know if you guys saw the footage on tv of the fire in an apartment block in Ludwigshafen in Germany, but it was really horrific.  Sad

There was a fire started in an apartment block in Ludwigshafen which is an industrial town in south western germany and so has many turkish immigrants. As the fire took hold, you could see the parents at the top floors of the apartment block, throwing babies and children down to people on the ground to catch them. It was so unbelievable watching that, it sort of brings back memories of 911 with people jumping. A number of children died in the fire and one died in being thrown from the building. Really tragic.

So, police suspect that neo nazis could be involved and this has created an international incident with Turkey. Subsequently they are sending their own invesitgators to Germany and trying to put as much pressure as they can on the German government regarding this.

I saw it on tv and it was horrible. I'm hoping that the German authorities treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves. It is too early to start pointing fingers yet though...........

I didn't see it.  But I can't imagine Germany welcoming Turkey's input.  We wouldn't like it.  And in fact if the roles were reversed I doubt Turkey would like it either.

Who will watch the watchers?

Now that it is over, what are we going to talk about?

Turkey and Germany has some very special arrangements..... We have in the past had German assistance in issues that involved German nationals in Turkey. Also Turkey has had active cooperation with federal and state governments in Germany in issues related to Turks living there.

Even if you see the images(3) in the times link, that is really horrific. It is one of those things that you always remember.

I must admit that I did wonder why Turkey would send their own investigators to Germany. It is a bit of a slap to the german justice system. Maybe because of the huge turkish immigrant population in Germany, they are frightened of the german authorities covering it up or not revealing all the facts to avoid racial tensions and backlashes.

Also could have something to do with a similiar case in 1993

Quote
“We don’t want another Solingen,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Prime Minister, said. He was referring to a strikingly similar incident in 1993: an arson attack on a Turkish family in the steel town that killed five and ruptured relations between Germans and the Turkish community. Only after sluggish detective work did police arrest four neo-Nazis.
