3 movies have hit the cinemas in the last few years(Joy Division just released and Control released some months ago) about the same topic. Ian Curtis and Joy Division!!
Has anyone seen any of these movies and if so, what did you think?
For those who are not aware who Ian Curtis was, he was the lead singer of a band called Joy Division, many who have argued one of the greatest all time. Joy Division is best known for the song "Love will tear us apart". You can't help but listen to that song and hear the soulful tragedy in his voice.
Ian Curtis had bad cases of epilepsy, a struggling marriage, and a self identity crisis. He had an amazing talent and a gift to be able to bring meaning and emotion to songs, but he struggled with the reconciliation of a career of stardom with his own personal life and problems. At the age of 23, with the world at his feet and weeks away from Joy Divisions' first ever USA tour, he sat down to watch a cartoon on the television and then got up and hanged himself.
All 3 movies capture the tragedy of Ian Curtis's life and the ultimate price of success and fame. They also capture the amazing environment that Joy Division existed in, at that time, the musical centre of the world, Manchester.
P.S. With the death of Ian Curtis came the death of Joy Division. Out of respect, the 3 remaining members of the band resolved to never play as Joy Division again. The remaining members started a new band, and called themselves "New Order".
