Can any of you think of an instance where an ambassador travels cross country to get between capitals?

even though the question was addressed only to the honest and rational, I'll invite myself and speculate that the ambassador was going to visit some places in between the two capitals. Those places could be the areas affected by the insurgency (officials do go there, it's not like "It's dangerous out there, let the folks deal with it on their own"), could be military stations, or maybe he had to meet some elders for talks, or a delegation from Afghanistan. Maybe there was a meeting scheduled between Afghan officials and Pak officials in the border areas to persuade the local elders to abdicate insurgents. Not that I have a money bet staked on the issue.

Correspondents say that such escorts are routinely sent with dignitaries and officials when they travel through tribal areas.

He didn't notify anyone at the office about his plans either.

ISLAMABAD: Local Taliban on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the abduction of Pakistani Ambassador to Kabul Tariq Azizuddin and said they would release him in return for Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah, Online news agency quoted Geo television as saying.

Not being over familiar with the ME, but is it common for insurgent groups who want captured members returned, to offer money to officials to get themselves kidnapped so that they can have a bargaining chip with which to negotiate a release? Or is it just me with a cynical and devious mind.

Huh. Ok. I admit it. That was rational.
