I haven't seen a good hockey game since the Can. womans team won the gold 2 olympics ago.
I love hockey I really do but I dont pay attention any longer until the play offs. Growing up with the Oiler dynasty kinda spoiled me but I also really believe hockey needs to get it's referee/rules in proper order - sorta bring them up to date - before it will finally mature fully.

Only time I see hockey is when they show clips of people fighting in the ring on the news.

I don't see much happening with the Rules Ahk, as it seems like they change them every year to suit what they think the fans want to see.

Actually, I think the NHL did alright with the recent changes. The third period has really become exciting recently and can/has changed entire games. But Ahk's right. The officiating is awful. GOD awful. They're all a bunch of old-school jack asses who couldn't skate out of the way to save their life. Plus, they always seem to be rougher on one team then the other (and I'm not saying this cause they penalize Philli for stupid shit). They need some fresh eyes out there. I'm just pissed the Flyers have had such a bad run recently. EIGHT STRAIGHT GAMES?! C'mon...

^^ Yeah what Abraxas said. It's not so much any rule changes. i think the rules are good, but the method of refereeing, the so-called video replay referee and so on, the dynamics around the penalty shot vs say just tripping. It's not really the rules so much as how they're enforced.
other sports have their shit together (some might say too much), like with football and challenging a video replay and basket ball officiating is top notch, imo.
Case in point: some game in around '97-'98 between the oilers and L.A. Very near the end of the second period scored tied at 1. There's been a lot of defensive play by both teams but now it's about to break open. Oilers come in close to the net and get a goal. But we had our toe over the crease and that's all you need. And there we have it too, a camera up top showing us easily that yes indeed his toe was over. So the ref takes a look on the side video camera replay and takes back the goal. Ok. Fine. That works. The very next play immediately after the face off in center when the goal was taken back. Theres a little jostling around and then an LA drive for the net...but jsut as they pass the blue line they do a change and there's too many men on the ice. Everyone in the stadium knows its too many men. Everyone watching knows it's too many men. Martians looking down through telescopes know its too many men. But the ref missed it. Hes watching the line. Boom. LA gets the goal and it end up a 2-1 win.
We immediately prepared to lay siege to LA but nobody knew Spanish so the plan kinda died on the vine.
So now I only watch play off hockey. Can anyone guess why? Because the officiating is top notch and runs on a "less-is-more" ideal, and the players aren't tempted into stupid retaliation over stupid or unfair calls. But even in play offs once in a while a bad call ruins a game. IMO, quite a while ago the game became too fast for one ref and two linesmen.

Exactly, Ahk.
Hell, just tonight at the Flyers game the whole thing ended in defeat because of a shitty call made in OT.
The ref calls a BOGUS holding with 1:25 left in sudden death OT. His hand was one the guy for less than half a second and it was AFTER the guy made his shot. Florida calls a timeout and 5 seconds off the face off they score. Game's over. Flyers skate off with their 10th loss in a row.
I was furious.
Plus, refs all too often jump into a fight. Granted, I like fights, but if you end them too soon (or stop them before they can really start) all you have is 2 really grumpy guys who will probably pull shit later on. Let them fight. Let them settle their score. Let them get it out of their systems.
And for God's sake, give the fans a reason to cheer!
In the final analysis, they need new refs... or a better penalization system... cause it just ain't working right now.

lol Apparently. Isn't it required that all Canadians be born in an ice arena or something? I'm just happy that Phili squeezed into the playoffs. They're 7 -1 - 1 for the last 9 games (I think) and have a great record against their first opponent. Granted, I don't have much faith that they'll get beyond the second round... but who knows? They may surprise me. Wait. I'm talking about Philli here. Ah, nevermind...

I see the Flyers are up 3-2 in the series Abrax. Avs just put Minnesota away. Jose Theodore was nothing short of phenomenal in the series. Wonder who is next?

Well, they were up 3-1 till today, but they're back in Phili for game 6... so I think they can pull it off. I had the pleasure to actually GO to the 3rd playoff game, which was their first game back in Phili. The second one (which I didn't go to) went in to 2 overtimes and was REALLY exciting. Well, some columnist for the Washington Post has made a name for himself in Phili because the ass hat doesn't understand what hockey is. Now, I knew Phili has a different fan base then other cities, but I didn't know it was that different. Personally, I think the guy is just a prick and sorry the Flyers were up 3-1 (when this was written). He wrote in his column ( LINK): For most of the evening, there was this unmistakable air of testosterone coming from the Flyers' direction that just reeked of physicality, a way of exerting their mauling style on the Capitals that just sent their denizens into some medieval state of euphoria.
"We want to make it physical between the whistles," Flyers Coach John Stevens said. "I think it's important for no other reason then it's the best tool we have to defend, to be honest with you. I think it's very important that we move our feet and finish our checks and get people pushed off the puck."
Translation: "We will keep punking the Caps until the NHL commissioner tells us not to."
Did we mention they show fights on the video scoreboard every period here, more than most arenas show dunks in the NBA?
Something about this R-rated environment is just not conducive to Ted Leonsis' Family Pack Night or Ovie on Ice. The contrasts are so stark and revealing.
The Caps' postseason slogan: "Rock The Red." The Flyers? "Vengeance Now," which comes across as less of a slogan and more of a sequel to Charles Bronson's "Death Wish."
The Capitals didn't come out as Eastern Conference foes; they entered the playing surface like Russell Crowe entered the Coliseum in "Gladiator." Flyer fans didn't want to beat Washington as much as see Ovechkin bludgeoned, his teammates emasculated.
It's almost impossible to fathom, but the Capitals took the ice in front of a building as loud as Verizon Center last Friday. The fans wore orange instead of the Capitals' red, and many of the women and children looked as if they could work security for Megadeth.
On I-95 entering town there is a billboard of Riley Cote, a stumpy rogue who engaged in 24 fights this season, twice as many as Capitals tough guy Donald Brashear. Cote's wild-man eyes and his quick fists are the only features shown of the Flyers' player.
Five minutes into the game, they showed a video of Philly's top brawls this past season, many involving Cote grabbing hold of an opponents' shirt for leverage before pummeling him to the ice, which is just a swell environment for children -- children of Patrick Roy.
They flat-out market and sell violence here, sanctioned, unbridled assaults disguised as sport.
The Flyers are an instant repudiation of what Gary Bettman wanted the league to become. They are a reminder of the NHL's pugilistic past that just won't go away. The result Tuesday night was Hartnell and Daniel Brière popping Cristobal Huet, making the Caps' goalie retaliate because no one on his team seemed interested in having his back at the moment.
Hartnell has become an annoying gnat in the crease, buzzing around Huet's ear now for two games as if he owns the area.
Unless Ovie and the Overachievers get untracked offensively soon and the sublime choreography of teamwork returns to the Capitals' line, there is but one hope left.
Quick, someone find a number for Donaghy. LOL I'd be angry if it weren't so damn funny. Well, the Wachovia Center (where the Flyers play) were gonna print out copies and hand them to the fans as they walked in... but the Washington Post issued an order to cease-and-desist ( LINK). I guess calling the women and children of Flyers fans comparable to Megadeath's security guards would have been a bad idea.
