Israel warns of Palestinian 'holocaust' as violence in Gaza worsens

ISRAELI'S Deputy Defence Minister has warned that Palestinians are bringing "a holocaust" upon themselves after two days of surging violence that killed at least 32 Palestinians, including nine children, and an Israeli civilian.

Among the Palestinian dead are four boys killed by an air strike on a soccer pitch on Thursday and a six-month-old baby killed when Israeli jets bombed a government building beside his home in Gaza City.

At least 17 militants were also killed, including five Hamas members whose assassination by air strike on Wednesday triggered the surge in violence. The subsequent heavy Palestinian barrage killed a 47-year-old Israeli man later that day in the border town of Sderot. On Thursday at least five new long-range Palestinian missiles for the first time struck central areas of the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon.

Speaking on Israel's army radio yesterday, Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai said: "The more (missile) fire intensifies, and the rockets reach a longer range, they (the Palestinians) will bring upon themselves a bigger holocaust because we will use all our might to defend ourselves."

Israel's Government has so far held back on ordering the massive ground offensive which it has repeatedly threatened to launch into the sealed-off Gaza Strip.

Witnesses said that four boys — two brothers and two cousins — died on Thursday after Israeli aircraft targeted a field on which they were playing soccer in north Gaza. Elsewhere, a young girl was reportedly shot dead as Israeli troops raided the southern Gaza Strip, and two electricity company workers died when an air strike targeted their van in the centre of the enclave.

The European Union has joined various human rights groups in condemning the rocket fire while also calling on Israel to avoid harming innocent civilians in contravention of international law.

Always improved terms!, now it's shoah
Nazi bâstards. Screw Israel. It's quite ironic that members of the Guilt Complex are so willing to allow the holocaust to reoccur through Israel. After all these years of being taught that the holocaust is an unacceptable practice, it happens to be Israel, of all nations, which uses the holocaust as an acceptable means of causing harm another group!

Untouchables, I read all the Israeli sources and they emphatically said the use of the word 'shoah' meant disaster in this case and not holocaust. Get your story right.

The shoah is indeed a form of disaster!- however this word is not usual in politic talks

It remembers me  when HRW viewers admitted that "Israel targets civilians deliberately in Lebanon"

What is the background to the offensive from the Israeli army?

Jeri, the Israeli's are planning a massive incursion into Gaza in several weeks to a month or two if the barrage of rockets do not stop.

One would argue that the deepening crisis with the US warships off Lebanon could be one of the reasons for diverting the media focus off Israel's incursion into Gaza:

Warships are there to keep Syria at home and leave Lebanon alone.  Wink

I read about that. Maybe the intention might be to create peace within Lebanon, but it is bound to have the opposite effect.

There a few countries in the ME like a powder keg waiting to go off at the moment. It is a real worry.

Tend to agree with Jeri but on a different premise. The country concerned is not Syria but Lebanon! Fuad Saniora is not very popular amongst ordinary lebanese and widely viewed as a 'yes sir' man to the US. This coupled with the US presence with the warships in the region can hardly be seen as maintaining 'peace' IMO.

Kactus, this is how I read the situation but correct me if I am wrong.

Hezbollah and the Lebanese Christians don't want the palestinian settlements. Either does Syria or Hamas. But Israel, US and some other parts of the Palestinians do?

I must admit that given many of the palestinians are armed, I can understand the majority of Lebanon not being thrilled about the situation. And given that their prime minister is seen as a US puppet, I can understand them not being happy at the US war ships coming there. Especially when they can't decide on a president yet.
