Well, if *I* were the federal government I might buy a few teachers... or help subsidize some alternative energy technology... hell, I might even throw it out an air plane over some run-down town in the Midwest (at least BBW would like that idea).

What wouldn't I do? I wouldn't a write everyone a letter that says things the American people already know:

Quote from: The Associated Press
Rebate letters to cost $42 million

WASHINGTON - At a cost of nearly $42 million, the IRS wants you to know: Your check is almost in the mail.

The Internal Revenue Service is spending the money on letters to alert taxpayers to expect rebate checks as part of the economic stimulus plan.

The notices are going out this month to an estimated 130 million households who filed returns for the 2006 tax year, at a cost $41.8 million, IRS spokesman John Lipold confirmed.

The rest... if you think you can stomach it...

I'm to the point where I'm not surprised... or even angry...

Just... sad...

You can expect this when there is no financial accountability.

And 'sad' is a good word.

I got my letter and I really dont see it as waste.

I asked a friend if he got his and he told me YEA its great!  He did not know it was going to happen and went out and filled his taxes and paid the 200 bucks he owed..

I wonder how much money these letters will bring in because peopel will pay thier taxes instead of asking for an extention or payment plans.

Technically, it's not "bringing in" any money. You're friend didn't pay his taxes.

I stand corrected I meant to say bring in money faster then usual.

My friend would have filed extension and sent the money in October, but sent it Saturday instead.
