This is pure opinion I am about to lay down here, so be kind.

I think that most people who view Countdown with Keith watch it because they know it is slanted and the man is funny.  They don't watch it to get "updated" or to be informed.  They watch it because it is blatant about being what it is, so it is a guilty pleasure.

Now, shows on the right, like O factor, try to take themselves too seriously and pretend that they are being "informative".  Large groups of people watch it think they are being "informed", even after the funny survey comparing O'reily watchers and The Daily Show watchers showed that really isn't the case.

Keith and Bill both know they are merely entertainers, but Keith is more honest about it to his audience.

Again, just an opinion.

I won't even touch the douchebagginess that is Hannity.

Good points in being showmen and also in re O'Reilly's pompous humorousness. I guess my sticking point is still that there are no cable or radio shows, to my knowledge, sticking it to both establishment parties. Where are Alexander Cockburn, Joe Sobran, Ralph Nader, Peter Brimelow and other true nonconformists of the left and right?

Perrin, I agree with a lot of what you said... but as a member of the media, there are still minimum levels of decency that must be met. All this comment does is make O'Reilly look that much better since he generally doesn't insult people. Yeah, O'Reilly is arrogant and loud... but not rude.

I think MSNBC should be allowed to do what it wants... but they have to be ready to accept criticism.

Personally, I think what the other companies did (fire the offenders) was a little "over the top", but hey, it's their company... it's their choice.

Keith Olbermann has cracked a stupid joke about John McCain wearing Depends diapers. Will he be suspended by MSNBC like David Shuster was for his "pimping Chelsea" crack or made to apologize as Chris Matthews has? Or is this overbearing and egomaniacal blowhard above the rules at MSNBC? Greg Pollowitz ponders the question at nationalreviewonline.com.

'Scuse me, but you can hit the candidate all you want, NOT THEIR KIDS. The Clintons have been accused of murder for over a decade. Any appologies? NO. If it is a joke about a fair concern, namely that a two term McCain, in a job that ages presidents in dog years, would be 80 at the end.

Age isn't a concern? It is pretty well confirmed that in Reagan's last term, he showed early signs of Alzheimer's.

And Bush has been accused of arranging 9-11 so what? Do two wrongs make a right? Also Chris Matthews was forced to apologize for comments about Hillary Clinton not Chelsea. As far as I care all of the pundits can make snide cracks about whomever they wish but if that is the case then don't get indignant about some and not others.

What did Matthews apologize for? Supposedly sexist comments. I say, SUPPOSEDLY, and offer none of my own judgments. But his comments were deemed sexist. To attack, based her being a woman, is not the same as an attack on McCain being old. Aging toward 80, in a job that ages you fast, has real consequences, which can effect the presidency and is legitimate as a concern. Gender, it is generally agreed, (though not universally) should not be the cause of concern. That is the difference.

And why did Matthews apologize? It's just business. Too many women in the audience were offended. That means loss of viewers and money. If enough old folks had complained with Keith? We would see the same. The fact is though, folks who are younger than McCain and would laugh at that joke, are vastly more desired by advertisers because they spend vastly more money. So, an offense to the old is not the same for business as an offense to women. Women of all ages you should know, are an even more desired market than men, because they control most of the spending. You don't want piss them off. On the other hand, it balances out for the old: they vote in larger numbers than anyone else.

Interesting to note: Matthews seemed to do everything but apologize...

Irwin:

So, if I read you right, it is purely a matter of toadying to advertisers. You are probably right-mammonistic capitalism controls not only all the major candidates, but also all the important media. A perfect illustration of the phoniness of "democracy". Over four thousand young Americans have died to bring this rotgut to Iraq.

Blood and money might be more appropriate.

All this O'Reilly ass kissing needs a response. Not rude? !!! "You keep your mouth shut." "Shut up." Words said to Jeremy Glick, the son of a man killed in the 9/11 attacks, because he came on the show and disagreed strongly with the war in Iraq. Not rude. Jesus. The right wing spin is like air around this place.
