NFL Question. What is the role of the punter?
«

In the last 2 years Australia has had footballers(australian football) leave Australia to try out as a punter in the NFL. There are two australians currently playing NFL as Punters, Ben Graham Bew York Jets and Saverio Rocca Philadelphia Sea Eagles.
Now my questions are, what does the punter do?, what is his role?, what makes a good punter/bad punter?, are they important to the team? etc etc. Just anything you could tell me about the punter would be great.
It is amazing though, that they can play in the NFL competition when they had never kicked an american football or knew the rules or ever played the game, until they went over a trialled there. Amazing story.

A punter comes in if the team can't get a first down. He kicks the ball to the other team.
A good punter can kick it long, kick it high, kick it inside the 20 yard line (but not the endzone). A really good one can kick it out of bounds inside the 10 yard line. It's all about height, length, and accuracy.
