It is turning round, and the debate about the past is happening - you are now free, for instance, to discuss the Cultural Revolution, Great Leap Forward, etc, over on China Daily.

I went over there just to find out what the hub-bub was and from what I can tell everyone is mostly pissed off at a specific CNN story, even more specifically an 'editorial opinion'. Then they run over here to tell us we're being brainwashed by our "Western Media". Do they seriously believe that the majority of the people who watched that took it nearly as seriously as they do? Because "we" generally don't. When some loud mouth gets on his soapbox on CNN you really shouldn't envision millions of Westerners pumping their fists in the air and "whoo-Whoo"-ing what the guy is saying. Most of us probably didn't even watch it and even the ones who did, well a huge number if not the majority probably rolled their eyes at it. The rest were probably just waiting for something else to watch. CNN is not taken as seriously as the people over at China Daily seem to believe. In fact if you watched the channel long enough you probably would've come across a much more moderate opinion on China in not too long. Same thing happens with Iran. You'll see an opinion piece making Iran out to be the Devil and then another more realistic one later. Ahk |

It all depends upon your position within the political spectrum. CNN used to be fairly balanced, but competition with the right-leaning Fox has given it more left-leaning tendencies, though I don't think it is quite as slanted as Fox is yet. I'd say your assessment of the BBC is spot-on. Few of us, least of all politicians, like to be told the truth when the truth is unflattering to us. |
