Yes, there are people like this out there. So far I've donated $300 to some kid in North Dakota to help pay for him to go to a high technology conference in San Francisco. I also bought a year's subscription to the Economist ($180) for a guy in Kentucky. I also donated $300 to a wonderful lady who lived near New Orleans and lost her house with Katrina. I also donated 'gold memberships' ($36 each) to about a half-dozen people at a forum so they could access a bunch of features they wanted but couldn't afford. All of these people are people I know only through forums. I'm a member of about a dozen political or philosophy discussion forums. These people are all friends - none of them asked for my help - I just offered it because I can. |

I'm kind of embarrassed - I've never bragged about that stuff before, I was just trying to show that the nice guy who bought the bottle of scotch wasn't that rare. Some people do like give to charities and do volunteer their time, money and labor for good causes (and even not-so-good causes). Other people like to share good fortune with friends and family. I'm not rich, but I'm certainly not hurting for money and I do make it a point to donate at least 5% of my gross income each year (and I hate the big huge medical research charities) so I tend to scatter my donations in small sums. Btw, most of these little 'gifts' I made were when someone bemoaned their lack of money to do something they wanted and I thought was a good idea (and the amount of money was relatively small). Besides, a bit of good karma can't hurt... I certainly have plenty of less noble actions in my past that could use some off-setting.  |

10 years ago, I got a hookup for a lawyer in New York state where I got a ticket for doing 97 in a 65 (on top of 7 Mile Hill outside of Binghampton  ) The attorney was great, helped me reach a reasonable settlement, and I'm still friends with both him and the judge.  My online friend Kevin, aside from being a theist and asst professor of history at Syracuse U., is one of the finest people I know. We go at it like hell over some things, but we're still loc'ed. I think he's finally gonna come up for a visit this year. That will be great. I've known him online for 11 years. |

I wish we could all go to a bar/pub/drinking establishment and just throw a couple back together. Hell, even Reaganite can come along. I'm only an avid member on one other small forum (so small, in fact, we know eachother on a first name basis) and I'd like to do the same with them.
I really do like everyone here and kinda think it would be cool to talk to everyone face-to-face and remove some of the internet's anonymonity.

You'll learn more about boats and the sea in a summer of that than 5 years on a big contship or tanker. Who knows? You might even make some cash while you're at it....  |

What you doing this summer Abraxas? Well, I took this last semester off and came home. I needed a change of scenery, so I'm taking a few classes in DE and finally got a job (no one was hiring... AT ALL). I'm thinking about going back in the Fall... but I'm starting to get reattached to the life I left... so I don't know. I could probably get you a job on a salmon seiner or a tender, which would be a great education in small boats for a prospective marine architect. You'll learn more about boats and the sea in a summer of that than 5 years on a big contship or tanker. Who knows? You might even make some cash while you're at it.... Well, since I missed this last semester of classes at my old school, I missed some of the classes I would need to have gone on my regular cruise... which actually puts me further behind then I already was (for reasons beyond my control). As a result, I need to make up this lost sea time, but it has to be through approved Coast Guard programs, but I won't do any of this until next winter when I hope to make up the cruise I missed this summer. Honestly, though, they're not going to great places. France (where everyone hates us, so I'll pass), Bermuda (which would be nice if the engine room didn't get to 120 degrees with all that warm water "cooling" everything down) and Ireland (which is really the only place I might have enjoyed). Otherwise, I don't feel like I'm missing much. I mean, it's not like they're seeing the pope (did it, loved it and I'm not even Catholic... or Christian... or faithful, for that matter). Anyway, if I can get sea time for it, I might very well drop you a PM . |
