Well, the first two threads I read here this morning - were replies to my posts - both written by longtime veterans of this site and both entirely uncivil, denigrating or insulting.

Heck, I can get insults on any trash-talkin' toxic forum on the net.  I should like to think that this forum is past that stage, but apparently not.

Note to all: I only take part in civil discussions.  If you can't be civil, you have no business expecting me to reply to your posts.

The problem with civility is that most can be civil but most cannot be civil all the time. Also one's own barometer for civility fluctuates; what was acceptable yesterday may not be acceptable today.

There's really only so much that can be done. I'm sorry if you're getting discouraged but I applaud your tactic of refusing to reply and telling the poster in question why. This wouldn't work if your posts weren't interesting or worthwhile, but since they are people will tire of the silence and or cold shoulder they get from you and will change their tune. Gotta be forgiving a little though. We all apply our own connotation to a reply depending on our mood. I am absolutely no exception to this weakness.
If anyone hassles you or tries to provoke your attention because they're being ignored let me know.

Dormouse, IMO IAP is poles apart now with regard to personal insults and flaming to what is used to be. I don't agree with when you imply it is same old same old. The odd insult now is minute and rare compared to the wild west that IAP used to be.
Yes, I agree with this.  My rhetoric was a measure of my frustration at two decent and interesting discussions 'going south'.  I'm all too familiar with that phenomena (particularly at this forum in the past) and thus I have a 'hair-trigger' response right now at this forum, half expecting some wave of toxic posters to popup and encourage me shutup.

IMO you shouldn't take these things personally.
I most certainly don't.  I consider them an attempt to end the discussion and treat them accordingly.

If you think they are out of order or they are annoying you, just ignore them. The majority of hard line flamers are no longer here so you shouldn't really have any problem.  Smiley
Fear not for me being 'thin-skinned' or 'touchy'.  I'm most certainly am not.  I've got well over 40,000 discussion forum posts since 2000 (scattered across a dozen forums) so I'm no wallflower or unfamiliar with such forum issues.  I'm just rather picky about where I bother to post. Too much static and I don't bother.  I just retreat back to post at a couple of private forums only and give up with 'public' forums.  That's just the way I am.  If the 'public' forum environment is civil and condusive to interesting and intelligent discussions, I'm there.  If not, I'm gone to where it is.

BTW, Wigs jokes a lot and brings humour to the forum, so if he jokes about something, he is not condascending you  Smiley
Duly noted.  I'm unfamiliar with who some of these 'new' people here (including yourself and 'bringbackwigs').  Other mods/admins I recognize from long past days (though usually as posters).

I think Abe Lincoln would have said it something like this:
"All of the posters can be civil some of the time and some of the posters can be civil all of the time. But never can all of the posters be civil all of the time."

Well, we all get at the end of our rope, either because of the person we're talking to... or maybe you just had a bad day.

By and large, though, IAP is one of the more subtle places to share your opinion. Generally the most irrational are tolerated for only so long, but are still understood to be irrational and are watched with caution.

I'm glad you decided to stay, Dormouse. We may disagree on a couple of things, but you're intelegent and certaintly a proficient writer.

Sorry, but I've since had cause to reconsider that decision.
