I am not usually up to the whole global warning/cooling and or climate change debate. A couple of degrees either way makes no difference to me.
But there are 2 things that bother me that put me in the same camp as some Environmentalists. 1) Pollution: I am not a native of California but I live here now. Nearly everyday I find myself driving in to the LA basin. As I look down as I drive across the mountain top and see that huge brown cloud of pollution and I know me and my kids breath that in on a daily basis. That can't be healthy. It needs to change.
2) Energy dependence: I would like to see the US and all countries for that matter to be energy independent. So we can all feel free to act or not act on the international stage without or motives being called into question.

A few basis points of a degree affects the natural climate on a grandiose scale. But OK. Whatever makes you do the right thing.

I'm in complete agreement with you Thief...independence, breath-ability, and sustainability. You hear about the Lake Havasu kid who died form an amoeba infection? Not to say outright it's global warming, but if temperature rises, then it becomes an incubator for this type of organism in certain areas. havasu amoeba

Well, one way is to let nature take its course in the forests. For millions of years people just adapted and moved, lo and behold the burnt areas sprouted Young grasslsnds and open areas for growing crops. And the biological evolution continues to a mature forest and this cycle always occurs if it occurs naturally.
Moral of this is we should not interfere with nature and let natural succession keep its dignity. Those who choose voluntarily to live there had better get expensive insurance and educate themselves.

Good points. I'd also like to mention that we need to reduce the human population, starting with the most thoughtless, who can be encouraged not to breed.

Honestly I know population control is going to be necessary as the worlds resources become scarce and to reduce or impact on the environment. But population control is SCARY. Its too Orwellian.

Maybe so, but no animal escapes the Four Horsemen (famine, pestilence, war and disease). Mankind are animal. Balance in nature seems so cruel sometimes, and is magnified by unnatural human intervention. Terry .

The whole idea behind it is also false. Its seems every generation is complaining about too many people, and yet for the most part we are better off than ever before. The big issue now, especially in first world countries is the fact that population growth is dropping significantly and we are left with caring for more and more elderly than ever before.

Interesting you didn't mention the Third world. Fact is currently there is enough food for all, we just have a distribution problem (Econ 101). Whatever, there is a huge disparity with birth rates between the first and third worlds that will have a huge impact on available resources in the future. Terry .

Overpopulation...a very interesting debate indeed.
Seems like a good idea to start a new thread!

Their birth rates are dropping (Mexico is aging faster than the US). China will be a mess and so will India.
