Lincoln and Kennedy ... given their track record I'll take character and principals over Capital Hill seniority anyday.

Character and principles sound like the selling points of Bush in '00. I think it's difficult to accurately judge 3rd hand the character or principles of someone with a pr department.

The fact that character and principles have been cynically used in political campaigns does not invalidate their importance. Your second point has some merit but still one can investigate on one's own and plow through the bs.
