Irwin,

An excellent point.

Well done. The smoking ban is only the beginning of course. I doubt we will like this country very much if we are still around in 30 years.

Pond, you make an interesting point relating to state laws impacting on Federal laws in the US. I musty admit, not being from USA, it is hard to get my head around how much power your states have compared to mine. Anyway, I might do a separate thread on that a bit later.

Just for clarification purposes though, the article in this case isn't about smoking bans or a new law prohibiting smoking.

It is about an employer(The county) making a new policy preventing recruiting of employees who smoke, based upon the premise of reducing costs.

So IMO, the argument is as much about employee discrimination laws and the rights or otherwise of employers to have the right to employ who they want or not want, as much as it is about smoking bans.

Should employers have the right to discriminate against hiring smokers because of saving overheads and cost reductions?

Interested to hear what people think about this.

If employers can refuse to hire smokers, then shouldn't they also be able to refuse to hire those who drink alcohol, or those who are obese?

Where will it end?

People who own dogs usually live longer, healthier lives, so can I, as an emplyer, refuse to hire anyone who doesn't own a dog?

JOB APPLICATION

Do you eat fast food? If yes, how many times a week do you eat fast food? Do you eat junk food? Do you drink carbonated soft drinks? Do you drink caffeine? Do you drink alcohol? Do you have diabetes? Does your family have a history of cancer, or heart problems?

Well, you get the idea.

This is obviously a bad idea.
