UNION CITY, Calif. (AP) - Republican John McCain rejected the months-old endorsement of an influential Texas televangelist after an audio recording surfaced in which the preacher said God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land.
"Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well," the presidential candidate said in a statement issued Thursday.

Hagee quickly responded that he was withdrawing the endorsement.

McCain actively courted Hagee, who leads a megachurch with a congregation in the tens of thousands and has an even wider television audience. Former GOP presidential rivals also sought Hagee's backing.

The preacher has controversial views that were well-known

He has also rejected Parsely's endorsement now.

Seems like he is no longer courting that Evangelical vote anymore huh. angel

All ministers, priests, rabbis, etc. should stay out of politics. This includes Hagee, Parsley, Wright, Jackson, Sharpton, Robertson et al.

What an absolute worm. Will kiss whatever ass is necessary for however long. Let's see if this is all over the "liberal" media for months like Reverend Wright. Wanna bet me it won't last the weekend? (It's a holiday, doncha know.)

No it is worse than that. McCain actively sought the endorsement of this charlatan hate mongering scum.
This wasnt someone who he knew that turned out to be bad . This was someone who is known for what he is and McCain looked him up and solicited his support to gain a political advantage.

Do you have evidence that he DID know about them before the endorsement?

Seeking an endorsement is WORSE than sitting the pews of a charlatan hate mongering scum for twenty years? Have the charlatan hate mongering scum as your spiritual advisor? Have the same charlatan hate mongering scum baptize your kids?

What planet are you from?

I haven't seen anything that said he did.  But it is beyond belief that he sought out an endorsement without looking in to the endorser.  If that is how he and his people do their homework, I wouldn't want him as pres.  'We didn't know before we sold them guns that they were involved in ethnic cleansing!'

Yes.  It is much easier to sit in a church as the preacher gradually turns more radical and to miss the decline.  Someone says, 'hey man, look what he has become' and then you can see it.  How often did he as you say 'sit in the pews'?  Did he go every week?  There have been times that I counted myself as a member of a church but hadn't attended except for special services.

All in all yes, McSame's problem with his preacher is far far worse.  And the only people that insist on bringing up Wright are the far righties.  Why can't they move past it?  Because it is a chance to mitigate their boys flubs?

It broke in the media, not from McCain. If anyone had anything to do with it, it was Hillary.

VERY well said.

McCain has seeked out a (well known) controversal preecher and accepted his endorsement, hoping all it would do is get him votes among ultra right wing (have you heard his stuff?) religion devotees... and then dropped him just as quickly cause people started hearing the sruff he was saying.

All Obama did was stand by a close friend... until he truely lost his marbles in the spotlight.
