The Minutemen and MoveOn.org represent vital and controversial points of view and have huge followings. Why not invite them and put their feet to the fire intellectually?
OswaldTheOsprey

As part of an on-going exchange of ideas, such as in a political science seminar? By all means.

Probably the more prosaic answer to your question is that the University has limited resources and limited venues and the students (most of whom are probably studying medicine or law or engineering, etc) have limited interest.

If the students interest is limited, the University should try to broaden them. Limited resources might be true for some schools but hardly Columbia.

I haven't read all the posts, but here is my take:

How they treated Ahmadinejad was simply embarrassing. I think he even mentioned that in his culture, no matter how poorly who think of your guest, you still should show respect. In this country, respect is hard to find. I think this will reflect poorly on America, and just gives the rest of the world more fuel to label us all assholes.

Maybe you are a asshole but speak for yourself.....respect is earned not given......I love the respect the Iranian govt shows their women and anyone who is not Muslim....I also love the respect he has shown this country......so you can lick this terrorist boots as long as you please...but some of us havent forgotten what he has done or said about this country.....funny how you would want us to show this terrorist respect after he has had a hand in killing so many US soldiers in Iraq......

Ahmadinejad is basically a PR man for Iran. The Ayatollah  and the Mullah's really run the country. His performance was acceptable for what his job is. He reminded me of Tony Snow dodging and weaving and answering questions with questions, or answering questions with pre-set platitudes that had nothing to do with  the question.
One thing he did accomplish IMO is to remind us of our history in the region. The Shah being put in power by the US to control his country for the US and the subsequent revolution against him and the US. The US arming Saddam against Iran in their war. Or the level of homophobia in the muslam world. Grin Little things like that we tend to forget.
The popular image put forth, of  Ahmadinejad is of a raving lunatic, denying all history, who is completely amoral and frothing at the mouth ready to kill everyone with nukes. The lesson here is that when you portray anyone in those extremes they will by contrast seem quite reasonable in real life and the intended discrediting will have an opposite effect.

1st, he really hasn't had much to do with Iraq at all.  The most anyone can say is that some elements of the Revolutionary Guard might be involved in supporting some militias, but the RG is more or less an independent entity, almost its own branch of the government.

2nd, he's the democratically elected president of a sovereign country.  It so happens that we disagree with his country's stance on the rights of women, homosexuals, religious freedoms, etc..  Does berating him in public do anything at all to promote change in Iran?

3rd, he was right about rudeness.  It would have been one thing if he had been asked about his views on a subject, allowed to respond, and THEN been dressed down about how wrong his views are and why.

I remember being a kid and going to my grandparents house when one of granddad's coworkers was there.  My family treated him politely, fed him, was very courteous, and as soon as he left went into a tirade about how much they couldn't stand that jerk off.  I asked why they were so nice to him while he was here if they didn't like him, and it was because he was a guest.

A dictator gets better treatment than the 'minutemen.' That's about all that needs to be said. I'm sure our Iranian 'friend' isn't used to such blatant disagreement. Perhaps he needs thicker skin.

I find it interesting that the ONLY thing he said that seemed to upset the left was his talk about gays in Iran. Past that, I don't see a ton of disagreement.

You are judge not by how you treat those who could help you or are your friends, but by how you treat those who can offer you no help or are your enemies.  (a paraphrase from some biblical verse)

Essentially, we should show anyone we invite over some respect, even if we do not agree with it.  An "applaud" for you wigs.

I wouldn't mind if Bollinger would show ROTC a bit more respect.

A dictator gets better treatment than the 'minutemen.'

Indeed.

3rd, he was right about rudeness.  It would have been one thing if he had been asked about his views on a subject, allowed to respond, and THEN been dressed down about how wrong his views are and why.

I agree that Bollinger's personally directed comments detracted from what could have otherwise been very good questions.

What could have been very good questions? The guy doesn't answer questions, he's above that.

That is why it was an error to invite him in the first place.  The discourtesy just gave him something to talk about while he wasn't responding.

Yeah, since Ahmadinejad is such a bad guy we should treat him poorly.

What a great message that sends.

This country has been far more respectful to far more evil people... so it has nothing to do with respect. Public preception and the rallies out front are one thing, but for Boelinger to berate the guy before he even speaks is unprofessional and rude... no matter who it is.

Actually, no it didn't, but that was a different situation all together.  It didn't bother me because I don't really care what MoveOn.org says.  Besides, I am more concern with a general who doesn't have the respect of his boss.

On that we agree. Then again, I don't care what anyone at Columbia has to say, either. Our General deserves more respect than a tin pot dictator, though.
