Generally, I would argue the purpose of suicide is to cease to exist, not start over in an afterlife.

I second that: If you think you will still be there after death, and even worse, have to respond to God for your act and live with remorse for the eternity, you certainly will not kill yourself.

The goal of life, in "normal" religions, is to do your best for the afterlife and for that you need as much time as possible on Earth as more time gives more oportunities to do good deeds.

Only "heretic" religion promote Heaven as a good reason to sacrify your life for the great cause.
But we are talking about sects like al-Qaida or something, not true religions.

I would disagree with that generalisation, actually. If your life sucks, but you are promised a better life (a heaven) after death, then why not kill yourself?

I had discussed with someone awhile back that sins are forgiven by asking for forgiveness....

It is difficult to ask to be forgiven for taking your own life after the fact.

This answer is incomplete, but may add a piece of the puzzle.

Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best; it removes all that is base. All men are afraid in battle. The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty. Duty is the essence of manhood

If the say religion doesn't offer a better life in case of suicide...
Well that would be unjust because suicadal poeple are often innocent, unfortunate and unhappy ones.

But religion often offer hope rather than an option to cut it short.
Oe of these forms of hope can be that unfortunate persons will be well in Heaven. So the longer you live unhappy and the more you suffer, the better for you in the hereafter.
