You have yet to explain how pulling all these commodities WON'T cause prices to skyrocket. You keep saying the dollar will fail but you can't explain how. You keep saying it's a fact that the Fed caused the depression when it is only one theory. Most theories say it actually only one of multiple factors. You still haven't explained why returning to 19th Century economics is a good idea. All this, and all I get is that I'm "inept" and a "moron." Find where I called anyone else shrill. No, just you. |

Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told GOP congressional hopefuls on Thursday that they should not be afraid to criticize both political parties — including Republican members of the House. During a conference call, the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman instructed candidates, campaign managers and press secretaries that given the anti-incumbent environment, it could be beneficial for House GOP candidates to distance themselves from politicians they may be serving with next year. “These [congressional approval] ratings are worse than we had on the eve of losing the majority,” Cole said. “Don’t be afraid to say you are disappointed in fellow Republicans… don’t hesitate to be anti-Washington, D.C.” For six years, the GOP held the White House and both houses of congress. Their performance was so pitiful that they now are running against themselves. Notice how there's no discussion of changing their policies. There's no discussion that perhaps the Republican party should start: - taking global warming seriously
- get some grownups to manage the economy, instead of ideologues who claim that tax cuts increase revenues
- decide that maybe they are there to represent all of us, not just the tax-dodging plutocrats Bush calls his "base."

Now this is something: A new poll of Alaska from local firm Hays Research has Barack Obama ahead in this deep-red state -- a place that has voted Dem only once, in the LBJ landslide of 1964.
The numbers: Obama 45%, McCain 40%, with a ±4.9% margin of error. Other recent polls from Rasmussen and Research 2000 have given McCain the lead here, so this poll might be an outlier.
On the other hand it's only the seond poll that we've seen from a respected local firm -- a poll conducted in July by Ivan Moore gave McCain a bare three-point lead -- so it might be an early sign that John McCain will have to work hard to hold on to a state that most Republicans can count on winning easily.
In that spirit, the Obama camp also announced today that they picked up the endorsement of Jim Whitaker, the Republican mayor of Fairbanks. |

Republican Sen. Gordon Smith of Oregon has taken yet another step to distance himself from the national GOP as he runs for re-election: The Oregonian reports that Smith has resigned his role as a state co-chairman for the McCain campaign.
The official reason Smith is doing this is so he can focus his time and effort on his re-election campaign in this blue state. But bear in mind that these co-chair roles are really honorary titles -- he wouldn't have to actually do anything except lend his name to the campaign, at any rate.
But for a senator who has now been airing ads tying himself to Barack Obama and John Kerry, it seems like even an honorary role on the McCain campaign is too off-message. |

Ensign Fumes Over Failed GOP Fundraising Effort

The chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee said Friday colleagues have not heeded his calls for contributions to contested races, threatening advertising on behalf of GOP candidates.
“It has become clear that my call has gone largely unanswered,” Sen. John Ensign of Nevada fumed in a statement. “I have no control over the timing or content of (independent) ads, but I have had no choice but to decrease the total budget for our (independent expenditures) unit.”
Republicans, who must defend 23 seats this fall — including five retiring incumbents — compared to 12 for Democrats, have faced difficulties throughout the campaign raising money while in the minority. The NRSC had $24.6 million on hand as of June 30, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission, compared with $43 million for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
