I would have to nominate Gandhi as a hero.

Common logic, sure. But I'm not saying Gandhi for most of the standard reasons people do.

Personally, I think his commitment to non-violence is a bit foolish in many cases. I consider myself a peaceful man, but there are many cases where I would be very violent. To a very meaningful degree, I think that pacifism on the part of the just often leads to greater violence by the unjust.

My admiration for Gandhi is based on his realism. I do not believe that he was truly non-violent in a meaningful sense. He himself said that poverty is the worst form of violence (a statement I see a lot of truth in), yet that is how he 'fought'. He encouraged boycotts of British goods, an act he himself admitted would subject British citizens to poverty. He even went so far as to apologize for this. Ironic that in eschewing violence, he would subject innocents to what he claimed to be the worst form of it.

Gandhi was a great strategist. He understood that in violent conflict with the British there was no hope for India, so he took the fight to the arena where they did have power (or more accurately, freedom)... he made occupation of India unprofitable... and it ended.

Interesting that you would consider Karl Marx a villain along with supposed "heroes" of conservative thought Smith and Rand. They all represent political extremes though, don't they?

Marxism and capitalism are twin evils.

You sound awfully familiar. An earlier member of this forum would often glorify fascism while condemning the evils and excesses of post-1934 National Socialism. I suppose that is a popular position among non-Marxist progressives such as yourself.

Would that be OswaldTheOsprey? I formerly posted on that name but forgot my password and quit receiving emails. It seems as though I was booted off but never told.
