PRINCETON, NJ -- The last Gallup Poll Daily tracking polling conducted before the beginning of the Democratic National Convention shows Barack Obama and John McCain tied at 45%.

The latest update includes two days of interviewing following Obama's selection of Sen. Joe Biden as his vice presidential running mate, and neither day showed an improved performance for Obama. Thus, Obama does not appear to have gotten the same type of immediate "vice presidential bounce" as have presidential candidates in recent years. That could reflect a somewhat muted national response to the Biden selection, or competition for the nation's attention with the Olympics. (The candidates who got vice presidential bounces in 1996, 2000, and 2004 announced their choices before or after the Olympics took place in those years.)

In fact, today's results, using Aug. 22-24 interviews, show both candidates getting precisely the same number of votes when more than 2,600 national registered voters were asked who they would vote for "if the presidential election were held today."

The race has clearly tightened over the past two weeks, after Obama held a modest advantage (averaging three percentage points) from the time he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in early June through mid-August. (To view the complete trend since March 7, 2008, click here.)

The Democratic convention, scheduled in late August to avoid a conflict with the Olympics, gets underway today. Michelle Obama serves as the keynote speaker this evening. -- Jeff Jones

With all the hatred of Bush and Republicans out there, I don't understand why Obama is not leading by at least 20 points....well.....I guess I do.....nevermind.

the gallup poll is considred more accurate becasue it uses the SAME 1000 "likely voters" daily... so you get tha changes in what the same people are thinking as opposed to 1000 random people who may or may not vote.

In any event with the BIGGEST advantage since watergate.. a president in the 30's and a republican congress shattered Obama can only get a AVERAGE of +1.5% in all polls which is below the margin of error.  Which means the race is essentially tied. His support is so weak its amazing, and his choice of Biden gave no bounce.

Lets see what the convention gives him, but with Hillary and biden unwillingly activley campaigning for McCain via TV ads during the convention I dont see a big bounce..  You have to admire how the McCain camp has gone on the offensive.  I want him to lose but he is ruinning a GREAT compaign against who most assume is the president elect already, based on the media coverage.

I guess you should ...its called racism, fear mongering, misrepresentation, misdirection, unfounded smear, misinformation and flat out lies. You have promoted and practiced all here to one degree or another as you parrot the Rovian style slime machine of the repiglicon party. If on level ground the American people were to be  given the facts and the policy issues at stake without the innuendo, lies, scum and slime style of your party's politics there is no doubt where the balance would be ... easily 20 points or more. I understand your need to do these things, without them your party wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hell.

HAHA OMFG.. you serioulsy are calling it racism.. heh... seriously.... "IT'S LIBERALISM STUPID"

Man.. seriously you need to wake the f up... IT CALLED HE IS THE MOST LIBERAL MEMBER OF A SENATE THAT HAS LOWER RATING THEN BUSH!

Obama gets 70-30 coverage.. time has had him on the cover 7 times in the last year and Mccain 2 times.. Obama gets more press but the problem HE HAS NO SUBSTANCE!!!

I pray every night he pulls it off.. the 1st and 3rd biggest liberals with harry reid 2nd and nancy...

They will kill liberalism once and for all and John Thune can be our president in 2012.  no one presidency can kill this country, so i will take 4 bead years to ensure 30 good ones from 2012.

I have cashed ourt most stocks to avoid higher capital gains next year and bought some gold and silver which is in my safe deposit box.  I have some cash stached away there too and will offset higher taxes by reducing staff further then I did in 06.  I may actually reduce my ft staff by 4 and bring in 4 people on parole who I can play 20% less.  That way I save money on wages and get a TAX credit for them Smiley

In any event I have a full financial plan in place if Obama wins and if McCain wins.

In essence I need Obama to win as it will also help to increase forclosure in the nest 3-4 years as he will work on bailout palce which get people further into debt...

I picked up a place in Phoenix last month for 15k... we are putting 10k into the repairs and will sell it UNDER market value for 90k....

The money from that will buy 2-3 more Smiley

As Al Gore learned in the 2000 election, this is the only poll that matters, and it hasn't waivered much.  In fact, there are many more electoral votes in the 'barely' category that could impact the GOP count than the DEM count.

With all the hatred of Bush and Republicans out there, I don't understand why Obama is not leading by at least 20 points....well.....I guess I do.....nevermind.

It is interesting that there's very little chatter about why John McCain would be a good president, it's all about why Obama would be a bad president.  People don't seem to be wanting to vote for McCain, they want to vote against Obama.  I'd think that a pity, but I think  back to 2004 and the only thing that mattered to me was voting against Bush....

May take a bit of reading and those such as Reaganite prefer pictures, but this provides not just numbers but some analysis.

The online interactive survey included 2,248 likely voters nationwide and was conducted on Aug. 23-24, 2008. It carries a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points.

Interactive polls are useless, but sure so the 43% who already support Obama agree with the pick is what you are saying.

HAHA OYFG ...There you go again BONZO!
No I did not call it racism, I called it ;" racism, fear mongering, misrepresentation, misdirection, unfounded smear, misinformation and flat out lies." ..."the innuendo, lies, scum and slime style of your party's politics"
Not only did you NOT refute any of the other things (very telling in  itself) I mentioned, but the ONLY thing you took issue with was racism... Now why would that be??? I guess racism is your thing...no I know racism is your thing ...in fact racism seems to be your main thing...most times racism seems to be your only thing...

HAHA OYFG... SOMEONE IS REMARKABLY TRANSPARENT

I understand Reaganite, as I noted with the post it requires some reading and hardly expected you to read. Its
more than obvious you may be able to decipher a few numbers, but when words of more than a syllable or at most
to are a requirement it has always been obvious it is way past your intellect to comprehend.

The proof of the pudding is your choice of screen names.  While he did scripts well as President that others like Noonan wrote, and even managed in a few B movies, he was not actually the sharpest knife in the drawer and by the end of his regime it was clear the elevator was stopping many floors beneath the top.
