The election of the new Pakistanese president will be IMO a major turn for Pakistan. It will be the first "democraticaly elected" (thought not elected directly by poeple votes). It must not bad for the future of the country and its economy.

Let's hope peace returns to these troubled parts of the world:  Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc
"The Jihad Belt", "The Army Fatigue Road".

Quote from: Augustine Anthony , Reuters
Pakistan's presidential election next week will be a three-way tussle between the country's main parties after the Election Commission on Saturday issued a final list of candidates.

Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, looks likely to win the September 6 vote by legislators for a replacement for Pervez Musharraf, who resigned as president last week.

Investors, their confidence shattered by political upheaval and militant violence, are hoping the presidential election will bring an end to uncertainty and usher in more stable politics.

Pakistan's stock market, which rose for six consecutive years to 2007 and was one of the best-performing markets in Asia in that period, has fallen about 36 percent this year.

The winner will be Asif Ali Zardari by the length of his admittedly long nose.

Hah. Yer dreaming. Looking forward at the next decade in Pakistan the only thing I'd invest in is gauze and gas.

Yeah, but there aren't only you yankees who have money to iinvest (if you still have any now that your banks coffers are empty).
So far nobody seems to put a dime in the US stock market.
I think the Islamabad stock exchange won't be that "abad" next years.

--> We are working hard on that. (no, just kidding Cheesy we don't do anything.)

Anyone notice the 'increase' in US operation inside Pakistan since Musharraf left?

I would contend these have been going on for, lets just say quite a while now and it's only Musharraf's leaving that finally allows these reports from the Pakistan army to see the light of day.

just sayin',

he will probably end up like his wife. Who ever gets him first, - Islamists or the army and the ISI. I hope he at least abandoned the insane idea of recognizing Israel. The Bhuttos offered that thing on the D.C. political market to buy the U.S. support.

Zardari might as well back off from his militant agenda after a period of torturous efforts. He might realize that fetching the army against the tribes is too costly, in all respects, and revert to the business as usual. Meanwhile, it's another case where a pro-American leader is substituted with a more pro-American one.

Then how come the U.S. spent tons of money against him in the election for Parliament initially?... plus I thought he was so nationalistic that he abhors any outside influence in the tribal northwest areas?
