The McCain campaign has no policies to offer the public. Its numbers are plummeting. The economic crisis highlights the fact that McCain has no expertise or even interest in economics. He promises to be every bit as incompetent as Bush.
So. What to do? Slime your opponent. Trouble is, there isn't much to work with. So McCain has to create something out of next to nothing. So out of next to nothing comes the supposed Obama-Bill Ayres "connection."
What does this "connection" amount to? Embarrassingly little:
Whatever his past, Ayers is now a respected member of the Chicago intelligentsia, and still a member of the Woods Fund Board. The president of the Woods Fund, Deborah Harrington, said he had been selected for the board because of his solid academic credentials and "passion for social justice."
"This whole connection is a stretch," Harrington told me. "Barack was very well known in Chicago, and a highly respected legislator. It would be difficult to find people round here who never volunteered or contributed money to one of his campaigns."
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/02/obamas_weatherman_connection.htmlBy the way, the Woods Fund of Chicago is a grantmaking foundation whose goal is to increase opportunities for less-advantaged people and communities in the metropolitan area, including the opportunity to shape decisions affecting them.
http://www.woodsfund.org/ Yeah, not many Republicans aroung
there...
So, in order to meet McCain's "smell test" all Obama needs to do is basically be in the same zip code with someone who committed a crime when Obama was about 8 years old but has served his time and now works for the betterment of the local community.
Okay, now we know what the standard is.
Applying the same standards to McCain, what might we smell? Oh, the
stench!
In August 1993, McCain traveled to the Pacific Northwest where he earned the illustrious distinction of becoming the first major politician to address the ultra-far-right Oregon Citizens Alliance.
His speech was preceded by some kind words for an anti-abortion activist accused of shooting a doctor.
"McCain quickly got a first-hand flavor for the OCA. Marylin Shannon, the vice chairwoman of the Oregon GOP, had a spot on the program to give an opening prayer. In short order, she praised the Grants Pass woman accused of shooting an abortion doctor in Wichita and thanked the Lord 'for Lon Mabon and the vision you put in his heart.''"
Shannon traveled to the Republican convention as a McCain delegate, and she proclaimed herself a huge fan of Palin as McCain's VP pick.
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/McCain_connections_coming_back_to_haunt_1007.htmlOh, the OCA is also a verulently anti-gay group. Nice people McCain "associates" with, huh?
Then there's this from the AP:
GOP presidential nominee John McCain has past connections to a private group that supplied aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua in the Iran-Contra affair.
McCain's ties are facing renewed scrutiny after his campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago.
The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America.

married to a
treasonous terrorist!
Her husband is a past member of the Alaska Independence Party, and she has addressed the group on several occasions. The party's goal is Alaska's secession from the United States and its founder [Joe Vogler] has said "the fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government."
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Olbermann_Palin_pallin_around_with_terrorists_1007.htmlAs MSNBC's Keith Olbermann so pithely asked of the virtuous and "patriotic" Sarah Palin:
"So where does Joe Vogler rank on the scale of terrorists who would target their own country, gov? Your
opponent's guy, Ayers, wound up on a volunteer anti-poverty committee in Chicago."
Know what? I'm WAY more comfortable with Obama's associations than McCain's.
