Has anyone made an extend journey by sailboat? I have cruised around Asia and middle east when I was in the Marines and I want to make a similar voyage when I retire, but this time I want to go around the world. I want to hit all the little island in the pacific like easter island, Tahiti, and such. Where are some good places to go to in the Mediterranean? Or Africa or S. America? It will just be me and my future wife and maybe one or two of the kids(by then adults).

There is a good book "Kon-tiki" by Thor Heyerdahl.
He's famous for his expiditions on self-made boats to Polinesian islands, Galapagos and so on.
His experiences can be useful.

I envy you.  It takes courage to do this kind of thing.
