mmmm.... very... democratic and israeli i must say.

Palestinian martyred, 250 injured in Negev Prison

23/10/2007 Violent clashes have flared at an Israeli occupation jail, killing one and injuring hundreds of Palestinian inmates who were attacked by Israeli prison guards armed with tear-gas and batons, officials said. Around 250 Palestinian detainees and 15 Israeli occupation prison guards were injured. Palestinians protested the incident, which they said highlighted the unjust treatment of Israeli detainees. The Palestinian Authority condemned the violence and the Hamas resistance movement held a demonstration in the West Bank.
The Prisoners Club, the main group representing Palestinians held in the occupied territories, said the clashes broke out at Ketziot prison in the southern Negev desert after guards started what it termed "provocative" cell searches. Palestinians responded by hurling objects at the guards, who fired rubber bullets and used tear-gas and batons to disperse the protest, said the Prisoners Club, saying that up to 200 inmates were injured. Mohammad al-Askar, 26, later died from his injuries at a hospital outside of Tel Aviv, a medical official said. He had just two months left to serve on a five-year prison sentence.
Prisoners Club chairman Qadura Fares described the situation at Ketziot, where around 2,000 Palestinians are held, as "serious".
A spokeswoman for the occupying regime's prison center confirmed that clashes began when guards tried to search a tented area where 5,000 Palestinians are being held. Inmates set fire to tents and threw objects at the advancing jail guards, who used riot dispersal methods to control the unrest, Yarona Zamir told France's AFP news agency.
The Club said the 11,000 Palestinians held in occupied territories would go on hunger strike from Tuesday to protest against "repression" at Ketziot.
The Islamic Hamas movement called hundreds of people into the streets in the southern West Bank town of Al-Khalil to protest the incident. Hundreds of people turned out for the demonstration, but police loyal to Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas dispersed the crowds by firing in the air.
Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina meanwhile denounced what he called "Israeli aggression" against Palestinian detainees.
"The prisoners issue should be closed as quickly as possible, otherwise the peace process can't move forward," he told reporters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Welcome to the Forum Ali  Smiley

Your argument here is not valid, tho am totally opposed to holding 11,000 prisoners without trial.

It is very common to use tear gas and batons to disperse protests in any prison and in any country. It's a jail!

Also, I'd guess the treatment of prisoners in Israel is considered a Mirage compared to neighboring countries like egypt , Jordan, syria and lebanon. Where are your 2000 missing lebanese prisoners in syria? Didn't you discover graveyards of dead prisoners after the pull-out of syria?

This is what happens to female inmates in Lebanon, a country that considered fairly "democratic"...read this 25 pages report by amnesty international.

Torture and ill-treatment of women in pre-trial detention: a culture of acquiescence

1 INTRODUCTION

Women arrested in Lebanon risk torture and ill-treatment at the hands of law enforcement institutions especially during pre-trial detention(1).

Widespread torture or other ill-treatment of women detainees, especially those accused of major criminal offences, takes place in police stations. Women in pre-trial detention are routinely held in incommunicado detention and coerced to confess guilt or testify against themselves at a time when they lack the protection of the law. Women accused of political offences have also been tortured or ill-treated. Another vulnerable category of women are migrant workers, who have frequently been subjected to torture and ill-treatment in detention

Good post Herdsman...

As a humorous side-note... as to the objectivity of the source "Ali" is quoting
The site represents itself as Al-Manar TV, Lebanese Communications Group... It's headlines are divided as follows:
- Lebanon
- Europe
- Turkey
- Zionist Entity
- Palestine
- USA
... etc...
http://www.almanar.com.lb/NewsSite/News.aspx

That they clearly recognize "Palestine", yet refer to the established nation/state of Israel as the "Zionist Entity"and not simply "Israel" should be our first clue as to the objectivity of the publication from which he quotes.... lol  Grin

Especially in Israel. It was Al Manar's Hebrew broadcasts and images of IDF casualties during the occupation that galvanized Israeli public opinion against the war. The Israeli military had portrayed its losses as minimal, until Al Manar exposed the toll. Speaking to Adnkronos International, Hezbollah media director Hassan Ezz Eddine summarized the Israeli response: "We have to watch Al Manar to learn the truth about our boys in Lebanon."
