COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Stephen Colbert's fanciful White House bid took a real step Thursday.

It's up to South Carolina Democrats to decide whether to take him seriously.

Colbert, who poses as a conservative talk-show host on the Comedy Central cable network, filed to get on the ballot as a Democratic candidate in his native South Carolina. His campaign paid a $2,500 filing fee just before the noon deadline, said state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler.

Whether he'll appear on the ballot will be decided by party officials later Thursday.

The host of "The Colbert Report" doesn't appear to meet the party's viable candidate qualification. And it's unclear if he would meet the requirement that candidates actively campaign in the state.

Colbert did appear Sunday at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, telling several hundred fans he would, if elected, "crush the state of Georgia." He also received a key to the capital city and the mayor declared him South Carolina's "favorite son."

When Colbert announced his candidacy on his show last month, he said he would run only in this key primary state.

Im gona crap if he atually has enough votes to have a "slice" of the voting pie.

HE DIDN'T GET IT!

The SC Democratic elections commission said no... It was just on the show...

I wonder if he knew before hand?

"Opponents such as Howe argued Colbert would make a mockery of the political process."

That made me smile.

Then he needs to run as an independent dang it, but I don't think you can do that for just one state for president.  I believe this was just to run in the primaries.

Who the hell is Howe?

Heard on the radio that the republicans turned him away also.

He didn't register as Republican. He didn't want to pay the $25,000 registration fee and additional $10,000 late fee.

It cost him $2,500 to register as a Democrat... but it would have cost him $35,000 to register as a Republican? If you needed any more proof that Republicans are rich, white people, this is all you need.

He tried to.  They said he missed a deadline.  If I can find a source, I will post it.

No kidding. If anything they aren't mocking the process but rather framing how the "process" is abused by anyone in politics.

technically won't he have to shut down his show?  I thought candidates couldn't get any free air time?  The cut out all the old episodes of Fred Thompson on Law and Order b/c of it.

Really?

Well, I guess he would have, but since he didn't get confirmed by the committee it wasn't an issue yet.

I think it's more like the show can't mention the campaign or be based around the campaign?
He said something about it around the time he said he was running for president... I don't remember 100%.
