It makes plenty of sens to try to assassinate Putin in Iran: That, if succesful but even more if Putin is only wounede, will destabilize the region more than the whole Iraq war. Iran-Russia relationship will deteriorate swiftly, and the attitude of Russia, so far unintrusive, will change dramaticaly. The stabilizing whieght of Russia over the region will be changed into another modern time crusade against islamists.
Who can do that? Al-Qaida.
It's Putin who kicked out al-Qaida from Chechenya. He is their primle target.
It also make sens that the news of it be released in the press: Now the terrorists know that the Kremlin is aware. Maybe they will cancel their plan.
