Im writing an essay on "Does ideology always support the status quo?" and am having such great difficulty putting across a balanced argument.
So far my arguments against are along the lines of cultural hegemony, false conciousness, use of the media, mainstream parties operate within capitalist ideology, once public take ownership of a new status quo, reluctant to give it up...
I really cant think of any arguments suggesting that is DOES support the status quo. I suppose it does if you look at Conservatives...Liberals do too... in a way.
Anyway, any thoughts on this question would be greatly appreciated!!! As i have to write it tomorrow... and im so stressed!!!
Thanks! xxx

It seems to me you could make a strong case that ideologies support status quo.  The collection of ideas and promotion of those ideas tend to be conserving and tend to support keeping the ideology stagnant.  People who support a particular set of ideas tend to want to protect them from alteration and change.

Status quo builds ideologies that back it up, which in turn are opposed by alternate ideologies. In case the alternate ideologies prevail and become status quo, they quickly shift to the mood needed to preserve status quo. FAI, no revolutionary ideology keeps being revolutionary after succeeding, rather they all invoke "being already there" as an excuse to not change any further. So they alter their original narrative from the necessiy to change to the necessity to preserve the outcome of change. Status quo, thus, builds an ideology to preserve itself, and all alternate ideologies shift to "preservation mode" once (and if) they achieve to be the new status quo.

I think all ideologies - with the exception of nihlism - all aim to support the status quo: the dominance of the human species and the preservation of human society.

not to mention the conquest and control over other societies! (human or non)
