I am a HUGE fan of Garry as a chess player....hands down the best ever lived or manufactured.

I wasn't a huge fan of him entering the political arena in the past, but he sounds so spot on one. This particular segment he simply stuck it to host in such a articulate and respectable manner the only thing Maher could do was concede....which he hardly EVER does if you watch RealTime.

I'm really starting to like Garry as a politician now. I wish him the best of luck as Putins sole competition even though he'll probably get crushed in the election.

neorealist, Garry won't win the Presidential election, of course. There are three reasons for that:

a. He is not ethnic Russian. He is a mix of blood, mostly Jewish. He changed his surname  for -ov long time ago. He's Kasparian, Armenian. He was born in Azerbaijan. In a multinational country like Russia it is a sensitive issue, remember comrade Dzhugashvili. People like Garry may become a cabinet minister or something like that.

b. Garry works with people from CIA and American State Department. It is a proven fact. Russia is not Poland. The status of Global Power obliges.

c. Garry is Rightist. Right Forces will be outsiders in the upcoming elections. It's not because they are Right, but because they lack experience and authority. Every Rightist reformer is vehemently hated and only President Putin can protect them. In a sense all Russian oligarchs are under his protection.

All in all it makes him loser in politics, though it doesn't diminish all of his sport merits.

Westerners don't know what the Soyuz Pravyh Sil, the Union of the Right Forces, means. To the Western ear, that sounds like a fascist para-military junta. In fact, this is a coalition of liberal free-market groups. Economically, Garry and Volodia are about the same. Don't really differentiate on the right-left dimension.


"racist" is too strong. Chauvinistic, probably. The idea that the national leader must belong to the titular ethnos is not exclusive to Russia.
