UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- A joint peacekeeping force will not be prepared to take over in Darfur by the start of 2008 unless Sudan quickly accepts units from outside Africa and contributing countries offer critical equipment, a top U.N. official warned Wednesday.

Jean-Marie Guehenno said the world could face a grim choice: either delay the takeover or start the deployment with an ill-equipped force that may not be able to protect its own peacekeepers, let alone civilians.

The United Nations has already been wrangling with Sudan over the U.N.-African Union mission for over a year while the conflict in Darfur has raged. More than 200,000 people have died since fighting broke out in 2003, and the peace process suffered a setback last month when key rebels boycotted talks in Libya.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa/11/15/darfur.un.ap/index.html

So unless other nations in Africa reach a decision and take action along with the UN, another 200,000 people in Darfur will die. For me, I think they need to do everything they can to stop the madness.

How can nations idly negotiate when thousands of people are dying? The Sudan must stop resisting and allow an effective intervention to occur.

Why? I mean other than some distant consideration towards civilized behavior as we term it, whats in it for The Sudan?

Sorry to sound cold but this region has been nearly as war torn for centuries as the Middle East. Do not expect them to change anytime soon. Further, do not apply your own moral code to what is a foriegn, indeed nearly an ALIEN society.

Here's what I think: in terms of morals we should get out of Iraq and stop this very real genocide from going on any longer. But in terms of politics it's not our business or our responsibility so what's the point?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for solving humanitarian crisises...but does it have to be us to solve everyone's problem all the time, I mean look at Iraq now...

Ever wonder why the Chinese seem to oppose us at every turn?

Because the US intervenes on sovereign nations internal affairs.

The Chinese are far more consistent than we are on this.....they have a "hands off" policy on the internal affairs of sovereign nations...reason numero uno why they have no intrest in the US telling them how to run their "human rights" issues.

No moral judgment here but I'd have to say, 'yes'. The Chinese are much more 'wait and see' but when they need to act they seem to make sure they've done their homework insomuch as carrot/stick diplomacy goes. They seem to have had their intended results/effect with North Korea after the 'bomb' test, for example, and when the American spy plane went down a few years back they handled that one expertly. They got everything they could've possibly wanted from that incident which really should've made them look much worse, (as in, incompetent).
