The gas is not free...... it just is not priced in money. The price that Turkmen (people of Turkmenistan) pay for the gas in the kitchen and the lousy 120 liters of petrol is freedom. Yup, it's very terrible to have a free gas in your kitchen...

An effective leader is one who is subject to democratic pressures, of which none of these totalitarian rulers are. They are instead concerned with protecting their personal authority, and have no real incentive to respond to economic or social problems. In all probability, if Turkey's government were democratic, quality of life would be far better. |

Roman Empire wasn't Democracy. Every Emperor was concerened with his personal authority and socioeconomic problems were solved by means of war. New territories, new slaves. Roman Empire was the best country in the world, the most progressive in terms of science, techology and living standards.Though, the Roman Law was far more totalitarian than that of modern primitive societies, say, in Australia.

Dude, Turkey's government is a democratically elected one. Turkey has a parliamentary democracy with multiparty free elections. The president is not elected by the people directly, but by the national assembly. The country that we are talking about here is not Turkey, it is Turkmenistan. Over in central asia, right by Afghanistan..... What's the need for freedom if you live in a poor country and can't get even a pinch of salt for free? Freedom is the principle factor that enables a society to create wealth. Without freedom of entrepreneurship, without a legal system that protects the individual right to property and the right to work you'd still be left with a poor society that'd get nowhere. The problem in Turkmenistan's case is that the totalitarian regime of Berdimuhammedow is in effect the continuation of the previous totalitarian regime of Saparmuradov. The state security council (the gang of thugs at the helm) basically declared the guy to be president when Saparmuradov died in 2006. Actually Turkmenistan itself is a natural resource rich country. It has sizeable reserves of natural gas and petrolium. But the people don't get to share the wealth that is created in the economy........
