Having done my time in the South, been to churches and seen shows like Pat's with his followers, I can tell you his viewers take him quite seriously. The only choice Southern Baptists seem to make is whether they watch him or another preacher who DOESN'T say such things.
Having said that, entertainment is definitely the word here. For generations the church was the only regular form of entertainment that part of the country got, especially in rural areas where the tradition flourishes to this day. Snake oil salesmen, freak shows, dances, fairs, public execution -- all a part of a long tradition of popular entertainment which went hand-in-hand with commerce all over America and in many parts of the world. Church is no different, though few developed that form as well as Southern Baptists, with their bombastic preachers and their shake-the-rafters gospel singers. If it developed most highly there, it is because the culture is very emotional and dramatic, as opposed to places like the Mid-West, where such things are frowned upon. It is no wonder that God-as-entertainment lives on primarily in the South, having migrated to TV. It is hard to find a televangelist that isn't Southern.
Yes, it is entertainment, but don't be fooled, most people, whether they know it or not, take entertainment quite seriously.
Hell is a place where there is no reason.
